Pollen Filters - Why bother in a Convertible?

I had an inspection 1 done on the Alpina today and noticed that one of the parts on the invoice was a Pollen Filter.

Now my understanding is that a Pollen Filter, prevents pollen from entering the cabin area and would be perfectly understandable on a normal car. However, why the hell would you have a Pollen Filter in an open top car ?

Surely if you were that susceptible to pollen, why would you buy a convertible ?

Does anybody know different ?

May be that explains why we see so many roadsters with the roof up on sunny days, they are all hayfever sufferers.?

The cabin filter helps to stop from clogging up the ventilation systems from dust, leaves and insects which causes smells and loss of efficiency of the air flow and then found out it has helps those who suffers from hayfever hence it now called a pollen filter.

I just cant believe if you suffer from Hayfever that much, why you would ever buy a Convertible, so am surprised they fit one to a Z4

Its not just pollen it filters as others have said. BMW actually refer to it as a Microfilter/activated carbon container

Heres a cut and paste of BMW's own info on the subject, I've even corrected their spelling mistakes! :rofl:

You do wonder what the owners are thinking and why they bothered with a cab.

Something I had not given too much thought to till recently, but do people on mass behave differently depending on how much a cars worth.

A friend of mines partner always used to have nice expensive motors, usually cabs, usually brand new or nearly new. Last car she had before her current one was a Mini Cooper S that was new when she got it and cost something like £28K. She hardly ever drove it with the roof down on her own, her partner had to be in it because she felt vulnerable on her on.

Fast forward a few years and they have had a baby and she has put her career on hold for a few years etc. As moneys tighter they could no longer afford a new car for her and shes currently got the same car, but this ones 10 years old and cost about £5k. Now she happily drives around with the roof down on her own no issues. I asked her about and its simply down to the fact in her head shes in a cheap old car now, not an expensive new one, still a Mini Cooper S Cab though!
