Pollen Filter - which one?

I would like to replace the pollen filter as I don't know if or when it was ever replaced, and there is sometimes a "funky" smell when I put on the Aircon!

carparts4less.co.uk recommend a "Hengst" Filter for around £8
micksgarage.co.uk have a "Mann" and "Wix" filter at around £15 and £17 respectively

So seems to be a rather large difference in prices........ any recommendations on what to get?

Thanks!
Marco

The price difference could be down to one being a charcoal/carbon filter and the other one being just cotton.

It's the carbon one you want if you want proper filtering.

Thanks itguy. Out of the three available on carparts4less.co.uk, only one make called "Denso" says "activated carbon", the others say "standard" so I guess you are correct and carbon is the one to go for as it is the most expensive....generally that's a good sign! :D

domsz4, I looked on Eurocarparts who have roughly the same parts but everything seems more expensive....they also don't seem to distinguish between carbon and non-carbon.

I reckon I'll just go for the Denso one and hope for the best!

Thanks for the info - I want to do mine as well and was trying to work out what the difference was.
The Denso option sounds OK to me...I notice that the part numbers on ECP are the same as carparts4less, are they different names for the same company? :?

Hi ped_78, No I don't think so, I presume it's just the manufacturer part number (so it will be the same at any retailer) and as you can see, carparts4less is a lot cheaper than ECP!

Ordered a Denso filter from carparts4less
I think they're the same (only different) company, as the part no's for all filters in the list are of the same format, i.e. 507110xxx no matter what the manufacturer.

Also...I just googled it.
People on other forums are saying that carparts4less items sometimes arrive with ECP stickers plastered all over them!
Must be an internet outlet for ECP...like "Toolbay" for Laser or "Justoffbase" for Sealey.

Ok cool, I also ordered the Denso filter from them.....lets see which one arrives first! :D

They seem to have very good prices all round, also ordered some Bosch Wiper Blades from them for around £9!

My order arrived today....in the most oversized box I have ever seen. Strangely enough though, the Pollen Filter they have packed is not a "Denso" brand as ordered, it is a Bosch one (and the box has a Eurocarparts sticker on it).

Now other than the Eurocarparts sticker saying it's a Carbon Filter, it doesn' say that anywhere on the part itself, the only thing on the filter is what I assume to be Bosch's Part Code:
1 987 432 368 Air Flow

I am going to try and look that up to make sure it is up to spec (and in fact a carbon filter).

"Ped_78" - did you get yours? and was it a Denso?

What colour is it?

If its a charcoal grey colour its the carbon one if its just plain white then its not

Marco, Yes mine arrived today.
I ordered carparts4less ref: 507110260, I received Denso part ref: DCF420K which is the charcoal filter (I think DCF404P is the paper filter).
Like you mine arrived in a huge box, it also had a Eurocarparts sticker on it....as expected!
FYI they're both white(ish), but the fanfolds of the carbon (charcoal) activated filter are a sandwich with the darker carbon layer between 2 paper layers...see: http://www.denso-am.eu/cabinAirFilters.asp for more detail.

If you're unsure just pop onto the bosch website and take a look, or post the Bosch part ref and I'll take a look for you.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Changing it is fairly simple, as long as you ignore the instructions that come in the box :headbang:

mmmm....not sure why they sent me the Bosch one. The only numbers/writing I see on the filter itself are as follows:
1 987 432 368 Air Flow

I've tried looking that up on the internet to no avail.

The box itself has this number "R2368" so I've done a search for that and found one french website which seems to indicate it is a carbon filter:
" Caractéristiques Infos : Charbon actif; L.233mm.; Larg.247mm.; H.32mm."

As for the colour, the one side looks an off-white and the other side a darker almost grey (covered in a light white cloth). As you said, looks like its a white covering on top of grey so I'm guessing it is a Carbon Filter.....

Not a huge issue but it is annoying ordering one thing and getting something different!

Popped into ECP today and bought a Denso 1. With the current 30% off it cost £12 and change.

Fitted in 5 minutes. The old 1 was BMW branded and definitely a carbon jobby and quite poorly fitted i.e. all bunched up on the left side at the bottom. It was not really that dirty but the service history details the last change in June 2010. There was an oil service and other bits done last August but no pollen filter mentioned in the paperwork.

At least now it's done so no chance of funky smells for a while.
