Polishing a turd

Paid arguably way under the odds for this ///M as it was pretty tatty, sold and priced as per the condition, amazing what a full day with Autoglym metal polish and engine cleaner will do

Old badness, this time last week

New hotness, after a full days graft

My fingers are practically ready to bleed after poking metal with a cloth for 6 hours, so any tips on how to really agitate a solution into tight areas would be most appreciated... I tried a paint brush but found the soft bristles just didn't scrub hard enough to get through. Can anyone recommend those steel wool pads for this kind of job? I need to tackle the tail pipes which are literally black, a soft cloth just won't even touch it.

I used a scotchbrite wheel on the end of my power drill with autosol for the tailpipes, came up a treat.

Is the scotchbrite wheel something easily found in the likes of B&Q? Will definitely be giving that a go if I can get the wheel bit.

I love buying cars that need bringing back to life , i wonder sometimes if the owners ever lift the bonnet to see what propels them :?
Nice job done

Excellent job. Looks great.
- Now some one will look at that and say " Wow.. Thats been lovingly cared for hasn't it ?" ...after years of neglect ! :D

Git mine from eBay fo under a fiver delivered. Got a 60mm diameter one which just fits, but would recommend a 50mm so you can get to the taper near the back box easier.

Good effort. Looks great now. I did the same when I bought mine, although my fingers weren't bleeding, as I think mine was a *tad* cleaner to start with

That looks nice now ncrossy.
I gave mine a going over today also as i'd say mine was even filthier than yours.
My question to you is what did you do with the rusty parts on the front slant panel ? mine has a little rust in that area too !!

Cheers

Thanks folks, I'm going to be getting the scotch-Brite wheel and going to work with that!
The rust is still there but less prominent now, I used Autoglym engine cleaner on most of the metal scrubbing it in with a paint brush...then blasted it all away with a hand held steam cleaner. What's bugging me the most is the black blemishes on the metal blocks, looks like engine cancer  tomorrow's job, wheels off and polish the hubs!

You would think for the hourly rate plus the ///M premium they would wash the engine down at service time!

Arrr I see, think I might give mine a good scrub, rub down, mask up and a little paint on it to smarten it up

I think I've just wrecked my tailpipes  bought what I thought was a scotch brite wheel but what essentially sandpaper on a wheel! It was far too abrasive, my pipes have completely lost their chrome finish and are now a brushed aluminium effect....they ain't dirty anymore but I reckon I've irreversibly wrecked the chrome finish. Metal polish isn't bringing it back! If anyone knows if this can be saved I'll be grateful for any tips.
