POI and speed cameras on Nav

How do you get POI's on the nav, and speed cameras too?

They must be there somewhere surely? I've got V28 software (Ithink) and 2008 maps. If I upgrade them will I get it? Or is it easier to just go aftermarket with all these bits included?

The BMW nav (with an official satnav DVD) on the e85/e86 does not have user-customisable POIs or any type of speed camera alert.

The closest you can come is to get a dodgy version. If you've got a PC with a DVD burner then do it yourself to save giving some other mug £30 for doing it for you.

If you go that route, then you're on your own in finding a source - and don't expect any help from BMW if your sat-nav locks up.

Personally, I use a TomTom for the functions the BMW system doesn't provide. I also use the weekly-updated camera database from [urlhttp://www.pocketgpsworld.com]PocketGPSWorld.com[/url] - which on a dodgy disc would require a new DVD each time to be up-to-date.

I usa a Road Angel for camera alerts, it's saved me a few times on mobile sites. I tried a dodgy disc with camera alerts and it kept crashing so won't do that again.

Interesting points, I really won't carry about a Tom-Tom with me, thats just crazy IMO. I'll just use various iPhone apps to sort it out I guess, and just live with it, just hoped I would be able to find the nearest supermarket/petrol station etc when away for work. The screens worth it with the intravee, but for satnav BMW would really have to of upped their game if I was to spec one in a new car. Ho hum no point worrying about it now

The BMW system does have its own POIs, just none that you can add yourself. IIRC there were POIs for petrol stations, service stations, restaurants, etc. Just don't think the POI system is as friendly as on most modern PNDs.

I use an Origin for the rest, works in Europe as well for the cameras and just updates via the PC. Small and great piece of kit.

Interesting... Do you know if these came with a certain version of the OS, or was only on post 08 maps (mines 08-2 IIRC)? That would be useful to have.

It's great at what it does do, it's just that base is pretty narrow

They were on my original 07-02 disc that came with my Z4MC and on my current 10-02 disc, so they should be on your's.

They're access from the 'information' menu IIRC and then you have to go through each of the sub-menus to get the category you want, then select a range in miles, and finally click search.

Not as intuitive as most PNDs, but it is an older-style system.

They have always been on any MKIV system. Also not intuitive is the method of clearing the POI symbols from the screen, otherwise every petrol station will be shown forever if you dont clear it :)

The POI have been on the disks as far back as I can remember as a part of the DVD system.

You can search for anything either near where you are or at the planned destination from hotels, tourist info, petrol, shopping and on and on. You specify how close and even if say you want Tesco petrol. Once you find one it can be selected as the destination.

Of course it's no Google, but a pretty extensive database. Once you select a type of destination such as petrol stations then it shows those in map view until you clear them down.

I was quite impressed when I was in Scotland, fancied a Chinese (food  ) and it allowed me to drill down to all sorts of food types and I actually found a very good Chinese restaurant.

I was impressed how well the Information/POI found hotels for me last month when we decided to stop over in the Cotswolds, listed them near to Stow, phoned the hotel for me then took me straight there! Pity it wouldn't pay the bill!

Now I have to find out how to remove all those beds off my screen :)

... unless you want to keep it there for bragging purposes as they are the points where all your girlfriends live :D

Don't rely on the iPhone apps for speed cameras. The GPS on the iphone is no where near responsive enough to give you a quick enough refresh for speed related stuff.
