Plug and play!

I popped to the local BMW stealer after work to ask about having some options changed on my 2005 Z4. I wanted to set the car so the doors autolock after 2 mins of not getting into it and autolock aboce 20mph (or whatever the speed is). They quoted me £45 to plug it in and sort it out.

I decided to think about it and then popped into a reputable indi nearby (Autologic in Hull). The guy came straight out and changed all the options free of charge. Really helpful and very informative (he has a Z4M). I was very impressed and will be using them come service time.

He even managed to enable remote roof and window close which the stealer siad couldn't be done!

The only prob is that sometimes when I hit the buttons on the key it doesn't respond or it unlocks the doors but won't drop the roof or vice versa. Does this sound like a key battery type problem?

Cheers

Si

Mine does the same. The doors work on IR and the top on Rf in the mirror, so sometimes the doors unlock but top doesn't go down.
If you put the body of the key under your chin and push the button it tends to work from further away and a lot more often.

Hi,

I took my E46 to Autologic in Hull for a rattle i had, they looked at the car for about 20 mins, had it on ramps and everything !.......they found the problem, a clip on one of the pads/calipers was missing, they installed it and then gave me the car back and said no charge !.....you cant really get better than that. :D

With the key, apparently there is no battery, i thought the battery was going on my key today, so i called the dealer (sorry, stealer) and they said that there is no battery as it charges up when its being used. I seem to do very short journeys lately so it wasnt getting enough charge. Im guessing but your maybe the same ?

Hi Easty,

I didn't realise that there was no battery but I did wonder if the key wasn't charging properly as I only travel 6 miles each way to work and back each day. It sounds like that might be the problem. However, I did 400 miles over the weekend on a trip to the Lakes so I would have thought my key would be charged?

I pressume you are fairly local to me then? I live in Hessle.

Si

Hello.

I too only travel 7 miles to work making it a 14 mile round trip. The woman at the stealership did go and double check and apparently it needs longer journeys ?...,maybe somebody else could have a little bit more input on this ?

I used to live in Brough, Hull is my home town really however i have relocated to Manchester recently ? Lived in Hessle for 6 months, nice place. And yes autologic is pretty cool. If my memory serves me correct, it was staff from the Local BMW Stealership (formely paragon BMW) who set the business up many years ago....

Sorry to dispel the myth that there is no battery in the key guys. If you want a look inside here we are:

You can see the battery clearly. It's a rechargeable spot welded into the key. It just needs using on a long run from time to time to keep it charged up

and just for the hell of it the other side where you can see the 3 micro switches that you 'blip':

Yes thats what I heard, BMW staff that set up their own business. Always looks very busy and everyone I know with a BMW goes there.
I know Brough well as I went to South Hunsley. Hessle isn't bad but is getting worse, would like to go to Welton / Elloughton when the housing market cools off.

CJ10Jeeper,

Thanks for the diagrams. I realise there has to be some kind of battery in the key, I was referring the the fact that it was a permanent item rather than something you can / need to replace.

Thats what i was getting at, i knew it wasnt powered by 'fresh air', as said its not something you actually replace once flat.

I will have to remember in future that some people on this forum take things a little too literal.

Nargh just happened to have the photos to hand from when I rebuilt my X5 key so easy to show what you're dealing with.

BTW one of my X5 keys gets a short run every 6 months tops, opens and starts the car every time, so I don't believe the dealer statement that 2x7 miles per day is not enough. I'd call Bullsh*t on tha one.

Hehe - step AWAY from the keyboard and take a deep breath Rick.

What German IC shop were you expecting to find logos for on the circuit board?

Bzzzt - thanks for playing :D

Oohhh, can I play?

Siemens spun off their semiconductor division which became Infineon.

Although I think the answer you are looking for is Bosch. You can't think German automotive without thinking Bosch.

Did I win anything?
:gmb:

Nice try - but the parts we see in the photos of the keys to our German cars still say NEC and Panasonic.

:poke:

Ahhh, but Alan your question was "What German IC shop were you expecting to find logos for on the circuit board?"

Crack open a German automobile and you expect to find Bosch stamped on a vast majority of the parts.
:crazydude:

Certainly can't fault that logic on the expectation side. But after noting the Japanese tires (OEM Bridgestones) with made in the US rims on my German engineered car that was assembled in the US my own expectations for an all German car weren't all that high :D
