Just had my blood test result ( PSA Count ) - normal - phewww ! Lost my dad to prostrate cancer and my uncles so I'm in a higher risk category ( although it's not been proved to be hereditary ) A good friend of mine was diagnosed with PS after a routine test some 10 years ago ( after I nagged him to have it done ) Despite being told he had little time left he is still here :D He had to undergo pioneering treatment at Marsden but despite all the odds beat it - shows it can be beaten even if advanced .

I urge all you over 40 year olds to be routinely tested - a PSA test may not be conclusive but a high PSA count can be indicative of a problem .

I had a test about 12 months ago and all clear. I was told even if I then developed it after 50, it was unlikely to be the thing that killed me within the next 25 years. As you say, its when it starts young and goes undetected that you could be on borrowed time.

Get a test now in your 40's/50's and be assured that your OK for another 20 years or so

Thanks for that. I am having bloods taken in a couple of weeks and will ask if they can include that as well. My old man had prostate problems. I bought him some fat balls for the bird feeder - it seemed funny at the time. Sigh

Also having the blood test in a few weeks, a colleague at work has prostate problems and our company have offered the test to all who want it.Thanks for posting on here, the more people who know, the better

Yes - just ask your GP - if you're over 40 , have symptoms or have a family history of Prostrate problems you should be given one.

at my age what will be will be, i'm not wanting to live for ever

still good to get checked though

Be aware a PSA test is only a protean test, you protean levels can be high for a number of reasons, you could read positive and leave yourself months of worry and some very intrusive tests. there is no divisive test for prostate cancer unlike a smear test for a woman, no black and white answer for men. the whole field of prostrate research is woefully underfunded and years off a simple yes no test. speak to your dock if you're worried they will give you good advice.
