Please help urgently! Door wont unlock + roof wont go up!

Hi guys,

Just picked up my first Z4 last night and I am having issues this morning! I am hoping someone here can help me and tell me I'm doing something wrong!

When I tried to leave for work this morning the car wouldn't unlock on either of the remote keys (which both worked perfectly yesterday), so I had to use the key manually in the door lock to get in. I then put the hood down and set off to work, and when I have got here the roof won't go up! I press the "roof up" button once and the windows drop, then press it again and I just get the red flashing lights! Someone please tell me that these 2 are linked by me doing something stupid?!

I am fully aware of the roof motor flooding issues but given that the door locks and roof worked perfectly yesterday I am really hoping I am doing something wrong or there is a simple fault here!

Please help me, it's due to rain this afternoon and my roof is down in the work car park!

Was the car left for considerably long time before you picking it up? Could the battery just be flat as a pancake and need a long journey to get some charge in to it?

You need to press and hold the button to put the roof up and down - is that what you're doing ?

No, was being used regularly, plus I drove it 150 miles home.

What bing says.... Are you holding the button?

The key maybe related to the car key battery going flat... Which is charged in the ignition... I had my key in the back pocket once and it kept a button depressed which killed the battery. After that i had to do a key reset procedure to get it to work again after it had been charged.

UPDATE: I just went and raised the roof manually using the red bowden cable, and it looked into the windscreen as it should. I then put the bowden cable back in and it now operates fine on the in-car button and the gaptech module! Also, the car locks and unlocks fine! I just hope it was something stupid and not a potentially recurring issue! :o

That wasn't what I was doing, no. I was pressing it till the windows dropped and then it was stopping so I thought it needed to be pressed again.

wasn't the stupid flappy roof box in the boot right?
it is entirely possible that the sensor on that thought something was pushing against the roof, and as such, wouldn't let you move it automatically.

I've had this and it was a tw*t to figure out...

Well I did raise that up and down a couple of times after manually raising the roof to see if I could "clear" the issue.

I still don't understand the unlocking issue though! Has anyone ever encountered unlocking issues with a roof problem before?

I am wondering if perhaps the gaptech could have caused an issue? What sort of problems can these units cause?

If you have a gaptech then you just need to press the button once and not hold it.

I had an electrical issue last year with my gaptech... Took my kanbus line down and i had loads of problems... From airbag lights, wipers and windows.

Dropped it to the garage... And after they unplugged everything on the kanbus realised it was the gaptech which had failed and shorting the line.... As soon as thy disconnected it everything worked.

Sorry, didn't realise you had a gaptech. The skotchlocks on the gaptech can cause issues, either by not being pressed closed enough or coming loose. Some people have soldered the wires in, others like me have used bullet connectors... The latter requires cutting wires, but allows removal without inhibiting the roof operation if you sell the car and want to sell or keep the gaptech.

Where exactly would the gaptech have been fitted? And how easy is it to get to? I will check the connections.

under the ashtray which is held in by one screw

Thanks. Will check it out!

I still don't see how this would have effected the unlocking of the car though! And they are definitely related problems because they were both solved at the same time! :?

When my gaptech failed it took down my kbus... Which controls all sorts from locks to airbags.

If you have a lose connection on the gaptech that could be explained i guess.. If maybe it was causing a short?! :?

Yeah, I see where you're coming from and it's definitely worth me checking, but, I would have thought it would mess up more than the unlocking alone if there actually was a CANbus fault? Weirdly, the unlock button would stop the alarm after opening the car with the doorlock, so the "unlock signal" was definitely getting through to something! Saying this, it all appears to be behaving now and I am wondering If I was just being a bit daft about something and there wasn't actually an issue to begin with!

Thanks for the input though guys! This is why I love car forums, they are a wealth of information and there is always friendly people willing to offer advice!

How easy was it to close the roof on the manual setting, i tried doing mine today ,the roof did not want to go up ,so I left it down. As luck has it I have a garage.

funny as I had the same a few weeks ago

roof wouldn't close, so pulled the red lever out then replaced it and roof close fine - maybe too much pressure in the hydraulics
