I am stuck between two z4s , 20.28i 22000miles 2014 plate and 20.20i 48000 miles 2017 both on the market for 16k , similar spec but the 2017 does not have the parking sensors. Please help

Doc they both have sport seats, are they heated? Does either have the drive? Wheels, run flats. We need photos really.

Thank you for the reply, they both have pretty much all the extras but the newer one doesn’t have the parking sensors, the light blue is the 20.20i and is the 2017 the other is the 20.28i 2014 with half the milage thanks for the help

I’m no expert but it seems that the 2.0i can be upped to a 2.8i. Also very low mileage doesn’t mean much if the car hasn’t been serviced every year. When I looked for my e85 some cars hadn’t been serviced for years due to the onboard service indicator and not much mileage done. Pondrew seems to be quite clued up on these cars, so hopefully he will be more help.

That makes sense thank you, I will be using it as a daily driver so it will not take very long for them both to have higher mileage, I was talking to my remap man and he said they don’t like working with the 2.0i as the pistons can fail on some but I’m not entirely sure he is right on this as Iv not herd it anywhere else , I’m leaning towards the 2017 car now thanks for the advice 👍🏻

The 2.0 did have problems with the timing chains but I think they were revised in 2014 so both my have the revised chain guides but personally I think I’d go for the 2014 one with less miles if you are going to be using it as a daily driver but it’s a difficult choice and a bit of a balancing act, I’m sure you will get some other options on this.

Thank you for the reply I really like them both and have wanted one for years , now with the kids grown up I am now in a position to get one the 28i does seem more desirable and not many for sale , only 18 on auto trader and most with very high mileage

Parking sensors are key for this car as visibility is poor at the front. Plus deep sea blue is the best colour.

The 2017 car is not a 2017 car. It may have been registered after March 2017 but it will be either a 2016 or even a 2015 production date.
The production finished August 2016. Worth checking as it could only be 18 months-ish newer than the other one.
Really surprised the Estoril 20i hasn't got PDC, as it is an 'end of production' model which they put lots of goodies on.

The Estoril is quite a rare colour as it was only offered from late 2015 for the run-out period , whereas the Deep Sea Blue are ten-a-penny, if that makes any difference to you.

Overall I would go with the 28i out of the two. It will hold it's value better and is potentially not very much older than the 20i.
Oh and £16k is a LOT for a 20i with 50k miles. Purely down to the reg year, which it isn't! :)

£16k is a lot for any 2 litre E89 in 2024, though. Values have dropped quite a bit recently.

Personally would always go for the 2.8, it's a 6 cylinder. I test drove the 2.8 as the dealer didn't have a 2.0 demo or was being shrewd  Ordered the 2.0 and regretted it. Always sounded like a bag of spanners on cold starts until warmed up. Was never really happy with it plus it felt under powered. I have a feeling the 2.0 engine was modified possibly due to top end oil starvation. Probably why mine sounded rubbish. Car also had an awful engine whine on cold starts which the dealer couldnt sort. Suffered it for 2 years and traded in for a new M135i.

Tim.

Looks like I’m definitely leaning towards the 28i , as for the colour I prefer silver or black but could live with the blue thank you

Tim’s suffering from memory loss…the E89 28i was a the same N20 engine..4 cylinder like the 20i...the 6 cylinder E89s were the 23i, 30i and 35i(s)…

Personally I’d go for the later car..post 2015 they did a number of mods to the engine to improve reliability..

Even without the parking sensors, Iv contacted the seller and it has the drive with everything that goes with that but definitely no sensors , quite strange I know

The longer list of Extras are for the 28i 2014 car the short list is for the 20i

The 2016 car seems very deprived of goodies..have you got the vin numbers to check properly

Unfortunately not , I think the original owner didn’t like the look of the sensors on the bodywork that’s why they wasn’t added Iv test tested a couple on the road which didn’t have the sensors and I didn’t feel the car were particularly hard to manoeuvre into parking spaces, both these cars are about 3 hours away from me so I can’t just pop in to see them but I feel I have definitely come to the right place for advice, thank you all

Ah sorry, yes correct. It was the 2.3 6 cylinder I test drove, think it was like a champagne gold colour. It was 12 long years ago

I don't know if the 2.8 sounded as bad as the 2.0. Mine was 2012 year production so may have been before the engine was modified. I remember feeling chuffed at the time as the engine had received engine award of the year but the reality was different.

Tim.
