Pleasant surprise from the Z

I just had to renew my vehicle tax for the first time, and as it's 6 years newer than my last car, the same engine size, and considerably quicker, I was expecting to pay top rate tax, which is nearly £500 per year. So I was very surprised to go through the online process and find that the Z4 is almost half that amount, £280 per year :) The emissions are about 40 g/km less than my old 5 series.

Obviously it's a false economy as the car was far more expensive to buy in the first place, but handing over a couple of hundred quid is far less painful than nearly £500 every year when my car often doesn't leave the drive more than once a week!

I'm guessing this would only apply to the later N52 engine Z4s? As I think the older ones have the same engine as my old 5 series (M54.)

Anyway, pointless thread apart from maybe a heads up to those looking to buy one.

The reason you're only paying £280 is because you have one the slow Z4's  :driving:

Well it's nearly 2 seconds quicker to 60 than my old 5 series, so plenty quick enough for me :)

It's one of the main reasons I didn't even consider an M. Couldn't stand giving that much to the tax man for the privilege of a weekend car :)

An extra saving of £20/month is a tiny price to pay for the unadulterated thrills of an ///M  :driving:

///M tax is the best value tax in the world!

M cars aside, I was just surprised that a 3.0 car could be in one of the 'cheaper' bands, as prior to this I've had a 3.0l 5 series and a 4.4l 5 series, both of which have always been in the top tax band along with Ms. I guess modern engines are getting less dirty.

Yup £280 for a 3.0l is a bonus, I'd love a Z4MC but as a DD I sadly could justify the extra costs, it doesn't stop me wanting one though :)

I think in terms of running costs in balance to performance the N52s make a lot of sense over the Ms. Apart from the last few 10ths (which you will not get near on our roads) they are more or less as quick and if you do short journeys they are a bit more civilised.

Wow :o British taxes are crazy mad! got a 2004 5.7 Dodge Ram it's like $165.00, taxes here are based more on the age of the car.

Both my Z4M & M3 were £490 & I could never quite understand why you were charged the same for a 6 cylinder 3.2 & a 8 cylinder 4.0 but happy enough to be paying nearly half that now but as others have said when you consider how much fuel you throw at a M car the VED turns out to be chicken feed & it isn't worth worrying about.

Totally right. The 3.0 versions (M54 and N52) are great value for the performance.

The cost curve starts to plateau after the 3.0 a little. But whether its an M or another high performance car, the plateau doesn't change. It's just gets really difficult to find a more rewarding car without spending mega money.
