This maybe the wrong area to post this question so apologize. Being from the US I continue to learn more about other countries as I read thru the posts. Not to mention more about our cars! My question is I have noticed on many of the posted photo's I see a white plate in front and a orange or "yellow" one on the back? Just wondering the reason is it a law?

It is!

The plate also gives clues as to where the car was registered and year of make

White at front, yellow at back, used to be black plates with silver letters and numbers

Yes, the white front and yellow rear reflective plates became compulsory in the UK on cars manufactured after 1 January 1973, but were legal some years earlier.

I get jealous when I see photos of cars in States that don't require a front plate - they just look so much cleaner!

Mr, Tidy, I have to agree I hate the front plates. And agree less is more. I unfortunately at end of 2019 was given a choice retire (we are sending your IT job to India or you can be moved to our office in the US state of Missouri. As I wanted to work a few more years I moved but this state requires front plates !!!! UGH. I came from a state that they were not required and the cars looked so cleaner. For my other two daily drivers I used under mount plates for the front plates. These two cars were bought in state not requiring a front plate so I kept them no holes. However the Zed already had the holes for front plate so just used them again. Plan when retire is to move to state not require front plate and get bumper holes patched up.
