Plastikote Vs Plastidip

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me what the difference is? I've never used Plastidip so unsure if it might be a alternative to Plastikote for spraying up a wrought iron gate. I've see people use Plastidip on alloys and get a great smooth finish but it doesn't look to be permanent? i.e. you can peel it off. So would Plastikote be better for the long term.

I wouldn't bother with either of those on a wrought iron gate.

Quick rub down with a wire brush (real minimum preparation) and a coat of Hammerite original and the jobs a goodun' for 5 years+
 
Any reason you've opted for these coatings over paint Tim?

I would have thought Hammerite be your best bet.
 
Thanks for the replies, I didn't even think of Hammerite to be honest :oops: As I would rather spray than use a brush I just wandered which would give a better finish, less drips etc, ok I know its only a gate lol :lol: Hammerite is durable but is it the best?

Use Hammerite all the time at work. I prefer to brush on but the spray can is equally good. Both very quick drying and can be used over the top of corroded metal. Just give a quick wire brush to get any flakes off.
 
I painted a gate recently and think the brush rather than spray will be best. With the spray can, you can cause a lot of waste - I suppose it does depend on the gate but on mine there is more gap than gate so the brush use means very little waste.

plastidip is the better product imo.. but for a gate? i don't think it'll stand up too well.
 
Thanks guys, its one of those scrolly half height type gates, I've painted with a brush in the past over the years but as its intricate its a bit of a PITA. I was thinking spraying would be alot easier but as said more wasteful. Sounds like Hammerite would be best, in the past I've used ordinary Dulux exterior non drip gloss and half a day painting it :)

You can get good results quickly with Hammerite and a small gloss roller (soft sponge) - a set with roller tray and a few replacement rollers costs less than £5 at our local Wickes
 
I don't mind those jobs actually, quite therapeutical to sit there on a chair painting for half a day in the sun 8)

I'm with PVR on this. Something quite Zen about painting complex metalwork on a sunny Sunday. Radio on, tea on tap. :thumbsup:
