Plastidip fail!

 Mostly Holland. Sometimes UK.
Well, more like the plastidipper (me) fail maybe.
Winter tyres proving their worth 100-fold in the snow and slush in Holland today but oh dear, what's this? The plastidip seems to have torn around the area of the tyre valve and has delaminated from the rim on either side. drat!
Cleaned the wheels thoroughly before applying. Maybe i should have 'keyed' the rims for extra adherance?

Yep that is a "feature" of plasti dip  its a temp coating ideal for quick removal , have you not used a powerwash lance near them yet ? :P

I did but i brought it a couple of feet back as i knew it was pretty fragile stuff. Can you see around the boltholes where its worn away slightly when i took the wheels off? Was being uber careful too. Oh well.
Wasnt expecting it to drumskin like that though.

Are there not videos still online where guys completely plasti-dip spray there car a different colour over windows & trims then simply peel off the surfaces they don't want it on ?
Why not rattle can them black ? With BBQ black spray paint it gives a nice satin finish but more durable

Yer, i'll peel away the delaminated bits to where theres still adhesion and redo that section.
Having second thoughts about dipping the 108's now. Theres all manner of sharp edges and crevices on those things!

Aye, might just leave it. I think plastidip is only suitable for basic shapes and is too susceptible to tearing on complex, sharp surfaces.
I heard 108's are difficult to refurb due to having to split them and even after the refurb, corrosion creeps in again quite soon.
Might leave doing anything with them altogether and just put some fresh rubber on the rears when they go back on. Theyre a bit tatty but not too bad.

You don't want them to outshine the rest of the car though, so leave them as they are. :P

I got rid of my 108's for exactly that reason, even with a full split, strip and powdercoat, as soon as you start tightening the bolts, you will break the coating, and they WILL bubble..

Love my 107's though :)

Mike

Maybe you can try wrapping them next time. You need vinyl, heat gun credit card, sharp nice poor fashion taste and you can do this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0aV2H57bES4

People will do this for you so you don't have to wear the shorts and socks. Flower vinyl would go down well in the Netherlands

Hard to disagree with the 107s route but if you split the 108s prior i can tell you a couple of places to drop them (within 1hr of Liverpool ) for a powdercoat refurb under £160 that will still look mint years down the line .

107s the best pre-facelift wheels. Doubt Chris McTightarse would ever stretch to the genuine product though :P
