Plastic thingys

I'm trying to remove some of the carpet pieces in the truck (boot). A few of the fasteners are round and have a slot in the middle of 'em. I tried turning the slot to different positions while trying to pull the pieces of carpet apart. I figured sooner or later I'd hit a spot that would release the pieces. That wasn't happening, so I tried getting more aggressive and pulling on the pieces much harder. Well, that just broke the plastic thingy. So does anyone know how those plastic thingys are supposed to work?

To expand on that a little they are closer to a plastic nut and bolt than anything and you have to reach behind the carpet to hold the back while undoing the top. Of course those that push into the panels are a ribbed stud and need wriggling out with patience.

Top when refitting the former is to glue the underpart to the carpet. Worked for me :)
