Planning high speed road trip - tyre pressures

As I am off to Germany in just over a week's time, I want to get the tyre pressures on the standard tyres right. Currently running on 32 at the back and 30 at the front, should I lower that as I will be cruising flat out on the German motorway for fairly long times?

The tire pressures are on a small sticker stuck on the bodywork when you open the drivers door. It's 2.1 bar front and 2.2 bar rear. Dont know what is is in psi though.

That is what I have as standard yes (2.2 rear, 2.1 front). I was just wondering if they tyres get very, very hot under long high speed runs if I should lower them to compensate when cold.

I reckon you'll be alright with that. Out here it gets upwards to 45 degrees in the summer and i keep mine at 2.1, 2.2 and i dont exactly baby it... It's been without any issues whatsoever. Dont think it mentions anything in the M owners manual either but i could be mistaken on that.

I ran standards in Germany last year with a 20 minute run at a clock speed of162mph. Original Conti M3 and everything felt fine. Not very scientific :? but there you go.

Hi Just had a quick trip to scotlland A1 M6 M8 etc tyres at what you say after 440 miles cold.
Had a quick trip round local roads after sorting problum, tyres hot :D

I wouldnt bother personally, you only generate serious heat when cornering not so much in a straight line unless your doing some serious numbers.

Only in the de-restricted areas. I have planned the route so we get the maximum distance of unrestricted stuff.

East Germany is also pretty friendly, low traffic volume and I not overrun with traffic police.

My new one, the E89 uses an extra 2psi in the rears for high speed runs (as per the tiny little sticker in the door jamb). Don't know if this is a help or a hindrance. Have fun, i'm driving to Phoenix on Friday, Saturday and Sunday...in a large pickup truck, at the posted limits. I think you will have more fun...

i hope this is going to be included in the new road trip section

I alsways thought that it was having pressure too low that led to blowouts, etc - due to the increased friction leading to higher temperatures.

Alan's article certainly seems to imply that. I have set it (cold) at exactly 2.2 rear and 2.1 front though.

I never changed my pressures. We had a couple of blasts up to the limited, but then sat with cruise on at 100! No need to alter pressures.
