Planning a roadtrip!

Heya fellers. I'm planning a nice little vacation roadtrip and want some opinions.
I'm wanting to go from Las Vegas to Lake Charles, Louisiana (just due east of Beaumont, Tx)
I did the drive via the I-40 to Amarillo, then SW to Dallas to Houston to home. While that drive wasn't bad there wasn't much to look at. I was thinking (google maps saying quicker) of taking 93 south till I hit I-10 and just cruising from there. Not sure if I will stop anywheres for sight seeing or adventures....I don't really know what is along any route besides major cities (well I do know about the Grand Canyon and will probably stop). Is I-10 just as bad along the whole route (potholes etc) as it is in Louisiana?

Well at any rate I'd like ya'lls opinions and suggestions (and perhaps places for a quick visit) on the route. I'm leaning towards the 93 South to I-10 as I've never been that way before. Tanks in advance.

*edit* As i look at the map more...I realize if I want to see the Grand Canyon than I at least have to take I-40 to flagstaff.
 
Definitely want to go up to Flagstaff and that whole area and enjoy the scenery! Never know when you may be able to make it up that direction again. I have done the cross-country 3 times and it was always 15 years or so between trips. Remember to stop at some of the roadside Tribal stands and pick up jewelry/decorations :thumbsup: HInt: most women love silver and tourquoise jewelry :D
 
I agree with ovrkll, hit Flagstaff and definitely the Grand Canyon. Will be great this time of the year. I've made the trip from Phoenix to Dallas and on to Jackson MS. I can tell you that west Texas all the way into Dallas is mind numbing. East of Dallas gets nice. One good thing is the interstate in west Texas is posted 85mph. :thumbsup: Even the cops know its boring! And no potholes at least on the 10.
 
My recollection is that I-10 might be slightly better maintained than 40, but they were both in pretty good shape the last time I travelled any distance on them (LA <--> El Paso on I-10 in 2000, LA <--> Albuquerque on I-40 in 2004). 40 has a bit more of the oddball Americana scenery while 10 just seems like high speed desert. If you're planning to stop and check out things on the way I'd opt for the 40; for the quick run to Louisiana take the 10. I still have fond memories of a college trip from Pasadena to New Orleans for Mardi Gras in 1980. Made it on the 10 in a hopped up Plymouth Duster in 19 hours.
 
Yeah the only stop I'm thinking about making is the Grand Canyon....and only planning to spend a little bit of time there. Anyone know how far (miles/time) it is from the highway? I don't want to drive more than an hour one way to get to it. Well I can always pull that info up off the website I guess
 
Well then first half of road trip done! I took 95 south untill I hit I-10 then just stuck on I-10 the whole way home. It was a long drive and I had the seat rather upright with myself pressed against it. I did on average 75-80 mph until I hit Houston....then I said screw it and started doing 90....what can I say I wanted to be home. Gas mileage was pretty good I was getting around 350-380 miles to the tank (well when the orange light comes on to say hey fill up). My back was tired, but not sore like the first time I took a long highway drive in the car. I may write more on the trip later but some food is ready so I'm eating.
