Pinking ? engine issue

I have been to hell and back with my Z4 with all the problems that I've had and finally I have a car that works...

I still have however a tiny issue that I'm actually embarrassed to go back to the dealer with as I have been there so many times

It seems that my car "pinks" when going up slight inclines and at low revs. It doesn't do it when its cold only at normal temperature. Its not a lot, but it still pinks slightly when the pedal is pushed - also you can only really hear it when the roof is down.

is this normal for these cars ? generally I try to run it on 97ron but I guess it gets a bit of everything

anybody got any ideas ?

You did not mention which engine you have. On my previous 3.0, I had the same issue. I only got 97/98 ron fuel, but even with that it was noticeable. Only once I had the 95 in the car when there were those fuel issues a few years back. With that fuel, it sounded like there were spanners in the engine.

Never did anything about it - dealer was not interested. Usual answer of "normal when under load" type thing.

PVR - thanks for your reply - I remember looking at one of your threads about this on the other forum before it went down..

the engine is a 2.5 2003 type which surely should adjust itself to the type of fuel used i.e in the cap it states 91ron>

has anybody else noticed their cars doing it ? i.e knocking/pinking

Do you always use the same gas station? Next time you need a full tank, I'd try a different gas station, and try putting 93-octane in the car. That might be worth a shot.

Mine does it all the time, always has done. If you use V power or something it goes away, depends on whether or not you think it's worth it. Mine performs far smoother with V power.

I thought I detected some pinking so phoned up my dealer: they advised me to take her out on the motorway and let rip! Clear the cobwebs & all that...

Pinking?? There's a 'pinging' effect w/lower fuel octanes as BMW always advices to use 91 as a bare minimum..

I always use 93 octane and have no issues of engine knocking..

ok - just a follow up !

I have put a couple of tanks of V power in now and the pinking noise has stopped so I am going to try and keep it that way and use it all the time.

I will mention this to the dealer when it goes in for its mot in september and see what they say.

thanks for your replys

I have noticed that when using this petrol there is far less difference when engaging the sport button but maybe its all in my head

mitch that's good news, although not for the wallet, V power is a bit expensive. Never noticed the sport button change - must be imagining it :P
