Pilots?

Started training towards my ppl at kemble ( near you it seems Stuart :thumbsup: ) but had to stop cus of final year university exams. Was flying solo when I stopped, just decided not to spend anymore money on it when I couldn't keep it up.

Always wanted to be an airline pilot (well I still do) but unless you've got a decent amount of money in your pocket it's not too easy in the current climate.
 
Growing up my family owned a stearman, i really miss that plane. It was loud, the radial engine would just vibrate the entire aircraft, and she had plenty of power, she wouldn't put you in the seat like a Vans RV-8 will, but you knew when you put the power too it. plus open open cockpit flying is an experience within itself. chasing aoudad through the canyon. Lots of fun!
 
Did about 40 hours in my early 20's when I lived in the states, but never solo'd. I ran out of money sadly. I definitely want to go back to it. When I were little all I ever wanted to be was a pilot.

Perhaps it's your coupe I've spotted a few times :)

Who did you learn with? My son is thinking about pursuing an airline pilot career and I'm trying to workout if I can afford to finance (or at least guarantee) £85k. Frozen atpl ain't cheap :o
 
Stuart Truman, if he's young enough and going to Uni then worth seeing if he can get a scholarship from an airline with training and a job at the end... Though places are rare as rocking horse sh1t. Or he could try for getting in the RAF as a pilot, doing a minimum commission (not sure how long it is nowadays) then after leaving try and get into commercial flying. But I guess RAF pilot spaces are even rarer... And you'll know all that already :wink:

The latter was what I always wanted to do, but not minimum commission. I planned on seeing out my later years flying to exotic destinations in return for wads of cash :D
 
Seeing what commercial pilots get paid these days, not something which sounds as enticing anymore, and the quality of the stewardesses is declining too!!! 8)
 
He's not going to Uni and yep, cadet-ships are rare. I'm ex BA so explored all that. At the moment if we do it, it'll be a US school and hour building.

For now, I want to be sure he's serious about it. It's a bloody expensive whim and I have enough of those myself :lol:

Your right on every point. It starts out as an addiction. By the time you obtain all the certificates and ratings just to meet the minimum requirements, you have so much invested that it's hard to get out. You really have to have a passion for flying. The whole airline industry is so dysfunctional it will never get any better. The so called "pilot shortage" is a myth. The crews of every carrier have taken so many pay cuts, most have to have a second job. As for the flight attendants, they just look older because of being abused by their carrier and always changing schedules. But go ahead, do it anyway.
 
Having been in multiple US Military aircraft both old & newish I can say er not really :D

Just search for F-15, F-16, KC-135, KC-10, etc etc....lots of images via google search.

:thumbsup: My grandfather worked as a civilian at Mildenhall. Great bunch of people at both bases and when I visited as a child I loved all the American cars. I saw an SR-71 take off from Lakenheath once, which shows how long ago that was...

This is so true. It'll cost you upwards of £65k to get a temporary unpaid (just hours building) job with the likes of Ryanair and they'll chuck you out at the end of the season. But that's why the flights are so cheap, your co-pilot has 125hours and a frozen ATPL and your helping to train him!
