++picking up used z4 SMG or Automatic++

I did the search but I think it won't pick up word less than 4 letters so...

I want SMG more but I don't know if it make problem?
I heard it dies if you go up hill slow and many rumors about it and it's costly to service.
any recommendation ?

manual is out because my wife need to use this car too.

Can't your wife learn to drive manual? I did, many other have too. Of course once she learns, you may not get her out of the car!
 
I've test driven an SMG and an Automatic, I think I had more fun with the SMG despite now knowing the smooth way to shift it. I don't know about any problems with the hill starts, but then I don't pay that close attention to smg problems. I've heard as well that it is really costly to service. Sorry I can't help you out more than that.
 
I have SMG on mine and I'm very pleased with it. I had a Smart Roadster before my Z4, so I knew what a bad semi-manual was like and what I'd be letting myself in for.

In terms of maintenance; as far as I'm aware there isn't any cost difference in routine maintenance between the transmissions (except perhaps gearbox oil, which may cost more for the automatic). Contrary to popular belief, the Z4's SMG is actually fundamentally the same gearbox as the manual with the addition of an electro-hydraulic actuation system (see page 15 of http://www.unofficialbmw.com/images/05 E85 Driveline.pdf). I'd expect it to wear the clutch a little quicker than a manual as it'll slip it more that you'd want if your not attentive at junctions, and Sport mode changes can be pretty brutal. And obviously extra components mean more things to go wrong than a manual (the pump failed on mine at three years old), but the same is true for an automatic.

As for driving; I think the key message is that even though it has an automatic shift mode, it isn't an automatic. If you drive it like you would a manual it's fine (i.e. you wouldn't keep the accelerator floored changing gear in a manual), but you can't drive around without any regard for gearchanges and expect them to be seemless all the time (although they mostly are). Not sure what problem you mean when you refer to driving up hills. It'll drive slow enough for me and keep it in gear (900revs in first). I think the only feature worthy of note is when setting off; it lets out the clutch a little sooner than you would in a manual, so unless you use constant gentle throttle (or alternatively totally brutal throttle!) you're at risk of kangarooing it until you're used to the car.

Oh, and you get launch control with SMG. Although I've been too scared of lunching the clutch to use it yet...
 
I don't think you'd be disappointed with an automatic. You've got drive, sport, or manual changes, which covers all moods and situations. I've not tried the paddle change though having it on another car since, I'd seriously consider it.
 
i would have to agree with everything that Andrew D has said. my smg hasnt been a problem since i've had it. it behaves like a regular manual.. i let go of the accel. whenever its changing gears.. and on the highway..it's fantastic.

smg is a :thumbsup: with me

It did. But every time you use it it's recorded in the ECU, and if you use it too many times BMW can void your transmission warranty. People used to say the limit was 10 times. But when I talked to a BMW field technician he said there's not a specific limit and it's judged case by case, but then again if it's over +10 times it's easy for BMW to make a strong case to void the transmission warranty if something breaks.
 
Launch control:

DSC off. Sport mode on. Mash the gas pedal. The engine will rev in neutral for a split second (until 2500 RPM or so) and then the clutch will engage. Tires will be burning and you'll be going nowhere for 1 sec as the tires struggle to gain traction - before the car eventually shoots forward. It's asbolutely useless for drag racing. But it's fun and something to brag about to your friends.
