Piano black added ...

In my typical impatient fashion I got to work as the sun started to set, replacing the main dash aluminium with piano black trim. Any work on this car seems awkward with space being so tight but as others have written in the past I can now agree replacing the main panel is a pain in the arse. Anyway, pics ...

What do people think? I think I like it, although the aluminium didn't look bad. The centre console is what I don't have, considering wrapping it but for the hassle and the fact I think it ties in well with the dial surrounds, door handles, bits on the gear nob and temperature controls I think it looks quite good left alone? Apologies for the poor quality pics , my phone doesn't like low light.

Cheers

i think day pics would do it more justice. So far I think the centre console wrap would be good although i would try to source original as piano black is tricky to match with the wrap.

Cheers. Yes the pictures look really poor, haven't seen it in daylight myself yet.

Yes I did the whole thing backwards fumbling in the dark, took the vent out and got that retaining pin out easily. But I couldn't work out what the other retaining clips were like and didn't have the nerve to pull at the trim harder than I was doing so removed ALL of the clips first.

Looks a good improvement / but I would be tempted to match up the center part, maybe use 3M's gloss black vinyl?

I agree, or get a body shop to spray it.

when I was searching for my zed I would only consider those with the piano trim

excellent job, be careful cleaning it

I recommend sourcing any kind of centre console and respraying it in piano black by professional body shop (i.e. primer, few coats of paint, followed by like 4 coats of clear and a polish/wax). Then you can sell the silver trim if you like as well or keep it for switch back when you get tired of it.

I like the contrast of both GlossBlack and the Brushed Aluminium

Some better pics , having spotted Google messing with camera settings through auto updates

thanks for the comments. I'll see how I get on, I have a spare centre console in Aluminium from a left hand drive so might relocate the sport button hole and wrap it and see what happens, only loss would be time if it doesn't look right.

On the piano black there are light cleaning marks on it from years of use I guess, not really noticeable but a bit like swirl marks on a black car with a light directly on it. Is the finish simply paint? - so can it be polished?

you have scratches in the clear coat. can be polished I'm sure but why not wax it instead - might do the trick much cheaper. Youtube probably has a lot of stuff on this as there are enough people anal enough to attempt this as a DIY.

Cheers Kartman that's not a bad idea I might go try some wax. Yes it is all superficial and border line being anal about it, no actual scratches just normal wear.

Cheers Deka, was hoping there would be a good contrast with the leather. I don't want to be taking it off again!

well, i noticed my tunnel trim is cracked in clearcoat as well. I guess I'll have to source some replacement too soon. :)

I was thinking of either spraying in plastikote gloss or wrapping mine, I've done the door handles as practice in wrap and its pretty easy to do. I just think plastikote would be harder wearing.

Yes I'd be a bit worried about the centre console in a wrap, carbon wrap I guess hides blemishes well but with this it would show up any scuffs to the vinyl. I think I'm going to leave the centre alone for now, I think it matches up with the dash binnacles (so I tell myself).

I'll give the dash a wax tomorrow and see how it comes up with some before and after pics if it does anything.
