If you don't need the full monty Photoshop product, the you could try something cheaper (i.e. free) like GIMP.

However, if you really need an Adobe product and don't mind missing a few of extras, then Photoshop Elements (latest version is 10) will do fine - and it's 'only' £50 or so. You can even download a fully-functioning trial version to see if it's suitable - and there are ways to keep resetting the trial indefinitely

I use Photoshop Elements 7 and it's fairly easy to use and does what I need, but I don't spend particularly long mucking around with photos anyway.

A mate suggested Adobe Lightroom is a better product, although it's a bit more expensive. I'm tempted by a trial just to see what all the fuss is about.

I agree with the above re: GIMP. Its free and has almost all of the funtionality of photoshop. Excellent online support too and forever evolving.

+2 for GIMP. Used to use photoshop, don't bother now as GIMP has all the functionality I need.

Give them both a trial they are free for 30 days.

Or do what most other people do... if your not a pro there is no need to spend £400 on PS. Or £1100 on the suite.

I've just started using Serif Photoplus X4 which seems quite good and was less than a tenner. I was put off Photoshop by the price.

I hadn't heard of GIMP (the product! ) but my g/f has used Picnik quite a bit and is now using something called Picnik Monkey I think.

Photoshop is great, if a little daunting at first. But I don't think anyone really buys it for home use, it's not worth that price to the non profesional user.

I'd recommend a wacom for use with that type of product though, even is it's a small Bamboo model, it makes a lot of things much easier.

wot

Wacom tablet, it's a pen and "tablet" which you use instead of a mouse. So it's more like drawing. Much finer and more natural feeking control for doing arty stuff. Bamboo is the basic model range, intuois is the professional range and then there's the silly money cintique which is more like a monitor you can draw on.

I've been here for nearly 3 years and still not got that many. In fact, I've got very similar post counts on here and on Pistonheads. Tend to skim most topics and only read a select few in detail.

I await my promotion!
