Phone connector thingy

Can this part be removed without being broken? If so, does anyone know how?... I have an idea for a little mod. But I need to remove this tray and I know there I two screws under this part to help remove the tray.

It is quite difficult to remove without breaking a couple of the lugs that hold it on place.
There are 6 clips that hold it in and are almost the kind that once its in its not coming out.
Heres a pic of the bottom of it to give an idea of where the clips are.

Thank you, this is really useful. If, or rather when I break the lugs, can I replace them? I want to keep the connector.

The lugs could probably be glued or araldited back on if they broke, I think 2 of mine just cracked a bit.
The next bit holding the connector also can be prised off but all I can remember is I left all the wiring attached and hid it under the console.
I think I read that part of the wiring is needed or your phone wont work.
