Well officer I was proceeding slowly (and the dashcam showed 7MPH) and turned right very cautiously across the ongoing traffic when.............

Go to 2 minutes 40 seconds in.

Thank goodness the van driver wasnt a nano second later on the brakes as it was all I had to do was deal with my trousers......... the car was untouched

Jeez you were lucky there.

I did that once but wasn't so lucky. Ended up scrapping my car and insurance paid for his. Learnt my lesson though and never attempted it since.

You should have gone to the right of that first van, that way you would have been able to see what was coming rather than cut through the line of traffic! :telloff:
Bromsgrove

Dont mean to be a smart arse but you could see the van clearly coming up the inside lane and should never have pulled across.
And as Lux said, why were you both crossing the road the way you were?
You should have been crossing before the turning lanes meet each other.

Close indeed, but all avoidable... well from the camera angle it was, don't know where it is mounted.

nope, not how the highway code suggests turning right at junctions ;)

Unless marked on the road ...

Considering the size of that junction, it is very badly marked out... In fact it's not marked at all

However I would have gone to the right of the white van I think. Probably wrong, but I've not checked the Highway Code :P

That was seriously close! I think I would have just waited for the traffic to flow through rather than slipping through the gap because it did look a little tricky to cross...easy to say as an armchair expert though!

actually, it has changed...

now says you have a choice, Rule 181...

that said there's quite a way to go before the turn so I'd have taken the same route the op took, but from the camera's sight line you could see the red van approaching, drivers sight line - only the OP knows...

Very close and well done to the van driver - I'd say you were at fault there though for not checking ti was clear to proceed!

Yeah, there could be a big difference between the cam view and driver view. And the van driver did indeed do well.

If I ever get a dash cam I'll think very carefully before posting any footage from it going by the experience of most on here who have done it :D

Rule 181 isn't at traffic lights with two opposite right hand turn lanes only! If both lines of traffic passed each other on the left no-one would be able to go anywhere, common sense should be able to tell you that.
I know that junction as I live in that town, there's plenty of room to go round the right hand side of the oncoming traffic and wait until it's clear to go.

yeah big lesson - one persons view of an event can vary from anothers.

I have a camera on my bike. Have I ever posted anything on any forums - nope. have I used the footage ever? yep, but emailed directly to the company involved and all handled privately. oh and once to the plod as evidence, again all private etc. the temptation is to become a youtube junky/vigilanty... but I can't be arsed

what were you taught when you learnt (when did you learn). I was always told to go off-side to off-side at traffic lights - in reality its hard to do, cos most people seem programmed to do nearside to nearside regardless. I actually prefer offside to offside but there you go.

there isnt any traffic light crossroad specific rules in the highway code that I could see - enlighten me?
