Peugeot 208 any good?

My son's partner has just replaced her C2 ( after some arse wrote it off for her ) with a 5 door Suzuki Swift - 2008 39k miles ,1 owner - just over £4k - its a 1.5 with a/c , electric windows ,cd etc. When we visited a few weeks ago the four of us went out in it - bear in mind I'm 6'7" , my son is 6'2" plus the two "girls " - well impressed with the car - interior looked quality . engine sounded quiet and pulled well despite the weight of 4 people .

Owned a 205 Roland Garros and 206 GTi (both wife's) and both were great, but new, carefully driven and owned, but I still didn't rate them and they lost a lot of money.

French cars are generally poor compared with say German and while they have improved their game others have just moved further ahead over the same period.

If you've had one bad experience then it's just not worth trying another.

Once owned a 306 for 7 years. Alternator needed replacing towards the end of my time with the car but apart from that it was reliable

I agree - no reliability issues with ours. Odd electrical gremlin, but nowt else really. Just lost a lot of money.

Truth is these days there really are no poor cars, not when you look back 20 years to how cars were built (Rover, Leylands, etc. etc.). Some are just even more reliable than others. Peugeot just seem along with many French cars just lose a lot of money quickly.

As an aside a car service picked me up today in Dublin with a 7 series and he'd just ticked onto 400,000km in it and had nothing other than servicing and a new grearbox since new....that's reliable.

I just think Suzukis are great value cars and they have a knack of producing every so often a corker of a car. I've had a fair few over the years and always been happy for what you pay.

My little 1995 Cappuccino was a blast,

I also had the 1.5 Swift and was great to throw around and a great little car :)

I remember people raving about the Swift on here before so I went and had a look. I wasn't keen on the driving position. It's far too tall for its size. I also thought it felt like it could do with a bit more power as it just wasn't much fun. And let's face it, the whole point of a hot hatch is fun. It was well put together and everything but I couldn't see the point in paying for a sporty one that wasn't very sporty.

I should be defending the 208 but even I don't have faith in them given recent efforts. I do know 2 people that have been running 208GTis for about 8 months. Both previously owned 335s and both seem to love them with no issues to report.
