Petrol types & fuel consumption

Not an advert I promise - but up till now I've been driving on Sainsbury's super-unleaded, which I gather is the same as BP's. When I try not to use the fun pedal too much I've been getting about 27mpg. Recently I decided to have a go with Shell V-Power after seeing "Honest John" raving about it (I often wonder if he gets kickbacks) and have seen 30mpg over the last 300 miles (driving to&from work, generally fairly sensible except when I see that bloody R32).

Hopefully getting a holiday to Europe soon and will get that mpg figure down somewhere more interesting.

Just wondering what other people fill up with and what their experiences are?

I only use Shell V Power or Tesco 99. I can see no differences in performance or MPG, so tend to go for the Tesco one which is slightly cheaper.

Me too, i use V-Power and Tesco 99 as a back-up if necessary. I have a lifetime mpg of 25.2 after about 12000 miles which includes tracks and autobahn blasts. She's been mine since new and i've never bothered to reset the computer, only if it did sub 10 mpg would i ever consider selling so not too bothered. Amazingly it's better than my Golf GTI Edition 30 that i had before though!

Don't have an M, but I thought sure I was getting 1-2 mpg more with Shell VPower than "generic" gasoline. I'm going to run it some more but sounds like it's consistent, even with the 3.0Si. :driving:

Overall milege is about 18mpg. Spilt evenly between town and countryside blasts.

I once had 30mpg on a run!

Use regular unleaded, gave up using super unleaded as couldn't feel any difference in the car.

Maybe using the Super Unleaded might give you a bit better MPG? I get 21.5, and I do a lot of short journeys.

Normally I get about 18mpg in a mixture of town and country driving. It's a rarity to see it over 20mpg. On a couple of long runs to Europe I averaged about 24/25mpg. I think the car runs much better on Tesco99 than anything else I've tried, including V-power which is now my second choice.

I don't know how you've managed 30mpg cliche, even when I'm taking it very easily I haven't seen it near there.

I use Tesco 99 usually or V power, can't say I notice much difference even when I use normal unleaded occasionally. I get 23-25mpg average around town. Just back from the Midlands Meet and averaged 28 mpg overall.

I use sansbury's super unleaded. I average around 22-24 mpg round town when im giving it some beans. When i go to work in manchester on a 50 mile motorway journey i can see 33-35 easily without taking it too easy.

You guys need to try pressing the loud pedal more often! :D
I know what you mean - though bizarrely I decided to ignore the MPG on the way home and have a play (though rather too many speed cameras for anything exciting) and hit 34mpg over 15 miles!

This wasn't supposed to be about mpg though :) - it's just that's the only hard data I've got (I'm a scientist at heart). I'm really after people's fuel opinions. There's no tesco petrol station near me but I think I'll be sticking with v-power for now.

Nothing wrong with v-power and that's what I go for if there's no Tesco99 nearby. I find the bunnyhopping issue these engines have always had to be much less prominent when running with Tesco99.

i drove back from chelmsford on thursday and i was getting 35+.i have i z4mc,my last car was a subaru impreza sti type uk prodrive.the z4 seems to be a lot better on fuel than my subaru :D

Interesting - as another ex-Impreza owner (I had an 07 STI spec.D) I'm also blown away by my Z4MC's amazingly good fuel consumption..!! Do you think it's because we're more used to changing up at 6k revs than the rest of them..?!

I might give it a go again. On my first Rospa training drive my average shot up. Maybe my heavy right foot! :D
