Petrol Gauge Problem

I filled up this morning having reached the ---- on the miles left indicator. Having spent £60 filling to the brim I turn the ignition back on and the ---- was still there and the petrol guage did not shoot up to full as it always does.

Instead, it very slowly, and I mean VERY slowly crept up, so slow in fact that 30 minutes after I had filled up it still hadn't reached half full. It is now showing around 140 miles left. I have not been back to the car since to see whether it will show the genuine level of petrol in the tank after another half hour or so.

Has anyone else seen this?

I am starting to feel that my Z is going to start costing me big money soon. Just a gut feeling right now, but this could be the first thing to go. Hope I am wrong.

There's a sensor in the fuel tank that detects when fresh fuel is added. I'd guess that this sensor has failed. If not, the fuel level sensor itself might have failed. This can sometimes get dislodged and get wedged against the side of the fuel tank making it difficult to move.

2 sensors actually, one in the fuel tank and one out of the fuel tank. My 03' had this problem and they replaced the outside first, then I had to go back and get the tank replaced under warranty.

As mine is an 04, the thought of having to replace the tank doesn't fill me with happiness.

The gauge has now reached the full level and every time I turn the ignition on goes up to the right level.

Can't understand why it took a day to get there :(

Had this on my 3 series on a couple of occasions, seemed more hassle than worth to get sorted plus it need to be doing it at the time it's at the dealers.
