Personalised Numbers

My recently bought 2003 Z4 3.0 has Northern Ireland plates from 1st registration (RUI 6**9) but I've decided to get something "better" and bought a new number from DVLA on a V750 (My initials 03 ZZZ). Anyone else had experience of switching plates this way? I hope that it will be straightforward!

It's not a difficult process to have the new number assigned to the car, however do keep in mind that once it's changed you will need to inform the insurance company and they most likely will charge you an admin fee for doing so.

You basically send off the V5 with the transfer document and usually in a week....two weeks max usually they will have the plate swapped. You may want to have your number plates made up prior to sending the docs off.

If the number with the car was the original reg then if and when you sell the car and out your plate on retention, if you choose to do so then the original reg will be re assigned back to the car.

Just for interest, you might get a buyer for RUI ####, as its a Portuguese name :)
Win WIn!
Worth paying for the retention u reckon then? I was just going to let it go.

you pay for retention?
Didn't know this, I thought it was automatically yours on retention when you swapped yours on.
Annual fee :-(

If this was the originally assigned plate then it would be held by the dvla to be reapplied to the vehicle if the cherished plate was removed from the vehicle.

If the plate was added as a cherished transfer after first registration then you would have to pay to retain the current plate. £25 for the year.

Also remember in addition to there is a further £25 fee (I Think) to have the nominee details changed so that someone else can use the plate. These Irish numbers usually go for around £50 so basically you'd only get back what you had spent anyway.

Don't forget that to get the plate made up, you will need the correct paperwork (the certificate you#ve received, or the V5 once its done, and some id, such as driving licence.

You can wait till you get the confirmation/V5 and a new tax disc should arrive within a few days of the others...cant put the plates on the car until you have the tax disc in the new number.

You should tell the insurance company that the registration plate remains yours (Dvla conditions) in the event of any total loss situation !

Just buy the plates off eBay and you don't have to worry about all that and it's cheaper

The DVLA take ages now thou, will take 3-4 weeks from the day you buy the plate. I got impatient and just put mine on once I brought it. I am a very naughty boy thou.!!!!

It's easy just not quick.!!
Agreed - seems to be pretty straightforward, but takes a week or three.

Done, but I'll wait for DVLA to send the V750 and issue my new tax disc & MoT cert before I attach them to the car. :)

Wherever you got your plates from then were breaking the law, cos they are still meant to check the docs. But yes, probably cheaper. BMW charge me about £20 a set, but I like to have the BMW dealer name on mine, as I think it finishes the car off (well, apart from the fact that a number plate looks crap to begin with!).

Putting the plate on early is risky....you will be displaying an invalid tax disc, and even though technically you own the plate at that point, I'm such they'd find a way to squeeze a fine out of you somehow.

But if you got away with it, and technically I don't think its hurting anyone, then who cares.

And a as of October there is no tax discs so you'll be able to put the plate on as soon as the plate is assigned. And technically the cameras used to check if a car is taxed use the number plate, it would only be the police if they stopped you who would check the disc on display

DVLA have done well with the V750 arriving 2 days after buying the personalised plate from their web-site. :D

Also have the new front & rear plates made up and have submitted the V750, V5C/2 and V62, so just waiting for them to send me a tax disc and I'll change over the plates. :)
