I was told to keep my old plates for when I sell the car - apparently the DVLA will register the car back to the old number and the old plates will come in useful. I don't know if this is true.

This is correct

Not true, or at least wasnt for me. The reg that was re-issued was different to the original one. Its worth keeping the plates just in case tho i guess.

Maybe some one bought the plate you originally had

If you have the windows etched with the original plate they will always re issue the original plate back, but you have to provide evidence of this, otherwise you maybe lucky to get the plate or get any age related plate.

Some of mine have had original plates back other not, the one with the windows etched did but I cant remember what I had to do to ensure this.

It's addictive,I bought MS10ONY a few months ago, looks like I'm gonna have to save up for a new Z registered from March this year to be able to get the plate fitted on.My Dad's always had a plate,my bruv has one,so does my sister,I guess it is something you do or don't. I know there are plenty who think they are naff, but I think they are just a bit of fun. :D

I have VR08OMM (VR08OOM is going to DVLA auction - VROOM) ready for a future car.
I have JJ08OHN and JJ08HNS for sale if anyone is interested.
In the mean time I have M44RRT and S1 A GT which I flip flop from time to time
Yes its addictive and no there is no real money in it unless you get very lucky

My TT had a plate ending in TTX, just because it used to be extremely cheap to buy personalised plates.
Those I've considered ending in "ZED" would cost the best part of 1K once they're on the car.

S11URV cost me £300 in 1998 when the "S" plate came out,it's not worth anything but I like it.It's been on my wife's cars until last year when I put it on my Z.I'll keep it forever, all my mates call me Shurv ( my surname is Shurvinton), so it works a treat for me. :D

my ex as M3 SUW, she doesn't have an M3 though, do you think thats worth anything, we only paid £250 for it, she would not sell it

I sold M111BDS, which was on my M3 when I bought it, for £450ish I think. I thought it was crap but i did manage to sell it. Don't forget there is £115 fee to take it off the car though, account for that. I had zero luck selling it through the websites like Newreg (just think how long it takes for someone to search for it...) in the end I sold it on an M3 forum. If you can find a guy named Stephen Ulysses Whittington with an M3, you might get something for it....

...but it's hard to make money on plates unless they are genuinely decent, and even then it might not suit anyone. Browse Ebay and you will find hundreds of lame plates with no bids at silly prices... often using screws and illegal spacing to make it even slightly resemble something. Those kind of plates look really chavy IMO. Take this one for example - on what planet does that say 'Zoe' ????

I think a good plate brings a touch of class to the car, mine is my initials then a number :)
