Personal plates question

Hi
I'm new to private plates and I had thought that when I assigned the plate to my car, that it became its number. But I have found that when I have entered my registration number in places online, it comes back as unrecognised. If I put the original registration in, the systems know the car. So far this has just been situations where it really didn't matter (Which Car satisfaction survey) although it would have been nice to be able to book my bmw service with the right reg. I'm just wondering if it comes to things like getting insurance quotes, I'm going to hit the same issue or it is just a case of databases catching up with information?

I know it is a bit of a dull question, but it has been exercising my brain about whether the personal plate is really the car's actual registration or not. I hoped with a private plate I would never have to try and remember a new plate again, but now I think I might have to remember two at a time...

Thanks if someone with more experience of this (and online car stuff) can help still my churning brain

When did you assign the plate?
The new plate should be registered to your car, but it can take a while
So when I search the Gov database for my car tax (https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax)
or MOT history ( https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status) I enter my private plate and it brings up my car.

You will need to tell BMW I think as they will already have a record for that car. The insurance database will catch up, but that could take some time also. I've seen my registration linked to an old car on an insurance quote that was changed over 2 years ago. All looks ok on the quote online , but when it's processed and paperwork issued it's then the wrong car.

Thank you for this. Just double-checked (and printed) mine. :)

Thanks for your help. I changed the registration four months ago. When I go to the DVLA, it does recognise my car as being insured with its personal plate, so that is probably what is most important. As I have been to BMW, they have probably changed the record too. So it just may be other databases that have to catch up. Hopefully by the time my insurance is due, September, everything will be good
Cheers
