Persistance is key

So called up my insurance company today to change my Zed's registration (vanity plate went on).

Friendly telephone operator proceeded to tell me I'd have to pay £17.50 for the change.

Needless to say I was fairly stubborn about the charge (having not been charged when my previous car had the plate changed, again with Admiral)

In the end after putting me on hold for a few minutes they said they'd wave the charge.

Conclusion: Don't accept it always when insurance companies ask for money. If you don't ask for a discount, you won't get it!

i did the same when the other half changed her car 4 months before the end of the policy. told them that the new car is £200 less to insure a year as i did an online quote and they waived the charge.

Admiral tried to charge me £30 for the same thing. Knocked them down to £15. I didn't renew with Admiral the following year.

Went with Tesco following that, when I changed my zed for a new one halfway through the year they wanted £30 'admin' fee. I changed to BMW insurance who not only beat the Tesco quote but also refunded me the Tesco 'cancellation' fee of £30. Not bad.

Lets see what the BMW quote is next time!

While registering my 7 day free cover from BMW, the guy on the phone offered me a quote. Told him they wouldn't insure me, he was so confident they would. No surprises, 5 mins later after asking all my details "We can't offer you a quote at this time'

In all fairness, Admiral have been good to me so far, not had a need to make a claim (hopefully will never need to) but have always been competitive with prices (the only reason I'm currently in a Zed!)
