The great thing about lying outside for a while is everything else you see - satellites, planets, the Milky Way... It's awesome up there, humbling and mind blowing. But the best thing is that losing yourself in a starry night never gets old

Bing you need a job!
You are getting to be quite the sentimental chap in your dotage.

Looking more likely in the reasonably near future, but let's not jinx it on here

I'm a bit of a sci-fi fan, and I have always loved things like the images the Hubble telescope takes - I swear I want to be frozen for 500 years and woken up when we can actually go to some of the places out there. And I've always found it therapeutic to be reminded exactly how insignificant we are in the scheme of things, puts life into perspective.

Mmmmm Sci Fi?

Me too.

Read The Godwhale by T J Bass.
Might put you off the 500 year sleep...

Excellent - I assume it's a good book ? Always happy with a recommendation

First read it in my teens. Found a copy in 2nd hand book store recntly and read again without disappointment.
It's intriguing with some action but also quite thought provoking.
Thought would make a good film one day....
I like my SciFi to have an edge of believability (that even a word?) and am not a fan of straight out fantasy.
Having said that you may think it's crap! If you do I will refund the price in beer when we finally meet...;)

Yep, with you on believability

Had a read on Amazon, like the description - looks like I may buy a paper book for the first time in about 2 years !

Saw the ISS last night. Would it show any detail via a zoom lens?

There are tracking programs out there that can figure out if the ISS will be flying in front of the sun or the moon in your location. Then all you need is a solar or lunar filter with a BIG zoom. Or a camera mounted on your telescope. This is the ISS with the shuttle in the middle left side.

Thought it was just yest?

Where do you live ESP, pretty impressive theres no light pollution from near by towns and cities in your image

I'm in Hertford, just outside north London. Our place looks over fields, and no other large town until Stevenage which must be 15mile as the crow flies. I can see the Milky Way tonight (just) from our front door. :-)

But in Hertfordshire ALL residential Street lights turn off after Midnight apart from Main Roads and Bus Routes (to save the Whales and Forrest's lol), so there virtual zero light pollution.

That said about 4years back we had a Shooting Star BBQ on a mates Roof Terrace behind London'd Kings Cross. You don't see all the faint ones but still see a lot.
