perished/worn out door seals?

When I picked my car up a few weeks ago, there was what looked like white residue on the rubber strip above the drivers door window. The dealer said it was probably wax from where they'd valeted it. But its still there, and if I try and wipe it away with a damp cloth, it comes back quickly, as if its embedded in the strip. It also feels dry.

Could this be perished or need replacing? There is a similar bit on the inside of the door - there is a triangle of black just inside where the mirror is, that has white over it too. Looks like bloom on chocolate.
 
I had this same problem on another car. Essentially it was faulty plastic that was replaced under warranty. Given your description of "bloom on chocolate," it sounds like it's "in" the material and not simply wax.

FWIW, I had the rubber seals around both doors replaced as it was clearly perishing... cracking and discolored at less than 2 years old. It turned out to be a bad batch of rubber that, according to the dealer, was a known malady on a run of Zeds. Perhaps they got some bad plastics, too.

If the dealer said they likely have caused it with a poor valet job, then I'd suggest to them they should remedy it... and then never let them wash it again. I've seen washers at dealers drop sponges and rags on the ground, pick them up, shake them off and then go right back to rubbing down the bonnet. :x

Try putting some silicon spray on them, spray on a lint free cloth and then wipe in. Obtainable from Halfords and is an easy job. I treat the Zed at least twice a year but then I don't do vast mileages. It may be worth a shot rather than buying new seals
