Performed the VANOs Repair Procedure Today

This thread has opened my eyes a bit in regards to my engine. I'm sure I'm a prime candidate for this fix, as I have always thought I had unnecessary boggin from about 1200 - 2500 RPM in 2nd and 3rd.

This fix looks to be at about the limits of my mechanical ability. This is going to take some courage on my part to execute, not to mention borrowing a friend's garage for the day.

Shipkiller, I don't suppose this is the sort of thing you'd be interested in helping a fellow Virginian out with one weekend at your convenience. I'd be happy to make it worth your while, knowing I had an experienced hand helping me.

What part of Va are you in? I am in Va Beach....

I can do it a lot faster now that I have done it once..

I'm in NoVa, but I'd make the trek to you at an appropriately pre-arranged time.

I'll take it to PM and you can respond to me there, I hope you're open to the idea.

ive gotta check if this vanos procedure will actually affect my car as in australia, there is only the single vanos. also, i will have to see if i can find someone to install it as for $60 its quite cheap to get a fix like that done

Its weird how my engine is a M54 and it is single vanos

i'm pretty sure you have dual vanos and not single vanos.... or else they wouldn't call it the M54 engine... singapore doesn't have strict emissions standards either but we get Dvanos all the same.

So i searched and i just couldnt find an answer to this. Are the Dr Vanos units rebuilt with the same materials that BMW uses or are they rebuilt with the material that Bimian uses? If I pay a little more to get rid of the rattle and the work it would take to take everything appart then id rather just deal with the swap. Im not just doing seals either so it would be worth it as long as its not expected to fail 20k miles from now :\

Shipkiller, I took a look at the products range and I cant really tell what you have ordered for your fix :( pls help...

They sell :

"Double Vanos Seals Repair Kit (6-cyl)"
"Double Vanos Rattle Repair Kit (6-cyl)"

Is that all is needed for the instalation? :)

czechT698, I don't remember but don't you have an ///M?

The S54 is not affected...

But if you have a M54, I just used:

Double Vanos Seals Repair Kit (6-cyl)
Item # BS001, $60
For BMW engines M52TU, M54, M56

The Rattle repair kit was not available when I did this. I looks pretty straight forward. My Vanos did not rattle much and the O-Ring kit fixed that particular issue along with the sluggish operation..

Shipkiller, :D I wish... I run the good old M54B25 like you :) Thank You for the help and clearing it up, its amazing what a bunch of seals can do... I should consider making a signature with details of my car now

This subject had gone away for a while but now it's back some members will be Reading with paranoia!!

I'll be giving it a go once the weather warms up.

So from the Beisans web site we are ordering the twin Vanos kit for E46 as there appeared to be no E85 there.
Am I correct..
Reading his site I am suffering a couple of these symptoms and will endeavour to complete the repair.

My tech continually calls my 2003 3.0 L twin vanos same as my 02 X5 engine.
Its gotta be twin vanos ...hasnt it.

The M54 engine in the E46 and E85 are basically the same.

Are you going to attempt this procedure yourself, or have someone do it?

Go back and re-read the thread: http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3600#p53569

That section of the thread talks about how to tell the difference.

I reackon I can skin this cat.
Will have a go when back from leave.

Has anyone had their Vanos fail?

I am trying to work out if this is actually an issue. I have no idling issues but sometimes when driving along it feels like the car is in too higher gear (bounces on the rev lower limit) but no startup issues.

I have an late 2005 Z4 2.5.

Hummm Interesting..

My car:
Late 2003
3.0i M54
231bhp model

My car doesn’t suffer any cold start problems as such.. and once it burst's into life it ticks over 1200rpm,then settles to 700odd if a remember..idling smoothly. Only thing i've noticed starting wise ..if i leave the car in gear and start it straight away after leaving in parked in first gear for instance ( i never use hand brake) it jump in the car put my foot on the clutch and start straight away it does start for 3-5seconds... ..lol but if get in the car turn on ignition take it outta neutral then start it's fine? strange.. my old e36 318is did this sometimes as well (due to leaving it in gear?).

The main thing that really interests me in the repair is the hesitation sub 3k and …the car does this when at 2000-2500rpm if I let if the thorrtle and gentle apply back I feel hesitation in the engine… or kinda a hiccup in power… I though maybe it’s just the way they are. Don’t get my wrong if I just stick to a max shift point of 3k the car makes very good progress and is plenty fast enough for most applications and I can easily keep it below 2k and keep with normal traffic. But it’s just not completely smooth feeling sometimes with the hesitations…not all the time just 30% of the time maybe. Not what I would expect from the famous bmw straight 6.

Just wondering has anyone had this repair done in the UK? If I purchased the kit and gave it to BMW to repair what should the cost ruffly be? £100?£200?£500?£1000?!? Will they even understand what I’m talking about?

Any UK guys had experience with this?

+49: How many miles has your car done, thats the most relevant info we need really... hesistation can indeed come from the VANOS, but also the DISA, bad petrol or even a slightly dodgy throttlebody setting. Id start by resetting your Throttlebody, this fixed my hesitation issues. You do this by (iirc):
1. Turn on ignition (wait 10 sec)
2. Turn off ignition (wait 10 sec)
3. Turn on ignition (wait 10 sec)
4. Start Engine
5. :driving:

Your startup delay shouldnt be happening really either, but sounds like your fuel pump is taking a while to prime fully.

EDIT: As for the VANOS repair, its not too hard. I wouldnt take it to a BMW dealer, but an actual specialist (cheaper and do the job better). BMW will prob turn their noses up at using 3rd party parts also! Where abouts do you live, im sure someone can recommend a garage!
