PERFORMANCE MODS FOR THE 3.0

Hi everyone! I'm new here and I am considering to get a Z4 3.0. I am very much into my engine mods and would like to know what are the best intake/ induction kits for the z4 and exhaust systems. (Heard about Hamann and AC Schitnzer) and if the Hamann ECU is any good? I would like to know how much I could increase the BHP figures by and improve the 0-60 time. ( I do understand that its not all about BHP figures etc not looking to start a whole "get a Z4M" discussion here! lol Just want to know the best performance mods for the z4 3.0) I would also like to know if BMW Main dealers do fit after market parts such as the Hamann Front Bumper and side skirt, AC Schitnzer wheels, Aero Spoiler and if I wanted the M suspensions fitted, would I be able to get those fitted at an Authorized BMW Main dealer? Anyone done any engine mods to their Z4 on here, I would really appreciate some feedback! Thank guys. Sorry for all the questions.

Make sure you get the 3.0si model as that has the M sport suspension, steering wheel and seats as standard.

Dinan is normally a dealer fitted item, unlike AC Schnitzer or Hamann. The gains from ECU/Exhaust/Induction kit are, IMHO, not worth the expense. Forced induction via turbo or supercharger make more sense, but once again, for the BMW Z4, it isn't cheap. Check into ESS or G4 for upgrades.

Cheers!

Speaking from experience - Don't waste money on bolt on engine modifications to modern BMW motors. Thousands of dollars = < 10HP. Superchargers are effective $$$, however, if you have not purchased yet, I would consider going the M route if it's within your means.

I looked into getting my 3.0Si remapped and was told not to bother as the gains would be minimal.

I did how ever buy myself a gruppeM carbon intake system for the car. This definately made a difference, doubt it added a great deal more HP but does give the car a bit more sparkle.

Only if you get the Sport Model not the 3.0si SE

Don't really know much about Superchargers and Turbos, hence I always considered "Bolt-on" mods as they are simple (Intake/Exhaust/ECU) and I didn't want to change the engine block too much as it might affect its reliability and not adding asuper charger to the engine sounds a bit complicated as I don't know what other mods I will need to do to keep the engine reliable and keep up with the extra "power". Eg I know for a fact that when Nitrous Systems are bolted on an engine, there are other mods that need to be done so that the engine doesn't "blow up". Thanks for all your feedback guys!

Or, forget the engine mods, buy the 3.0si and spend the difference you would have spent on the cosmetic mods.

I do agree, if you feel you need more power than the standard 3.0si, buy the M as it can get expensive!

I've had a quote to supercharge my 3.0si from a company near me using the ESS kits.

The TS1 kit costs £3250 plus vat and fitting takes approx 8 hours.
The TS2 kit costs £4250 plus vat and fitting typically takes 12-14 hours.

They simply charge their normal workshop rate for fitting the conversions and they charge £50 per hour plus vat so this should give you an idea of total cost.

Link (this is quoting the pre 2006 3.0i models which had less horsepower).

Mind you, I did a price and spec check on my Z4 to my spec on the BMW website and the same spec Z4 M would have cost me almost £10,000 more new! Extra running costs not included! :o

Super Chargers add running costs too - not to mention voiding warranty.

Yes they do, but the car is warranted from the installers (you could wait until warranty runs out) and running costs still don't compare to that of an M. I was thinking of going down that route, but after having my 3 for a bit now, why bother! I don't exactly hit the red line in every gear on every trip as it is!

Mind you, that engine supercharged would be worth it for the sound alone!! :heat:

I'll state it one more time - if one is worried or concerned about "running" costs, they're nuts to have bought any BMW. For the record; I hit redline two to three times per commute and I'm loving it - so glad I didn't settle for the 3.0 litre - come to think of it, BMW does not even ship it to Canada

+1. And good luck trying to find a buyer when it comes time to re-sell the car. Not that it's impossible, but it's definitely been proven and proven again to be extremely difficult.

You can get an SE or Dinan intake, Dinan front air-duct, and a free-flowing exhaust, and you WILL feel some positive difference when you drive and the mods will make you excited - for about a month. How much do those mods translate into 0-60mph times? They might make your car 0.1 second quicker.

If you simply want to make your M54 quicker in straight-line, just get a more aggressive rear differnetial. It's poor man's supercharger, and cheap enough to install/uninstall. If you have the manual transmission, you can get a 3.46 that essentially gives you an extra 28HP (the car doesn't actually gain any HP; it just puts more to the ground), or a 3.64.

Don't forget on costs I am talking UK prices! Only $53,575 for the M in the USA! £44,680 in the UK for the same spec as my 3.0. The M is over £10,000 more to buy than the 3.0 and the added costs to run one in the UK is a lot higher! Next year the road tax for the M could be horrific because of emissions!! :o
Fair play if you hit the red line in every gear, every trip!
In Canada the emissions are prob that tight that the M prob has the same BHP as the 3.0l in the UK. :fuelfire:

But, as stated earlier, if you are looking at performance mods for the 3.0 you were probably better off with buying the M.

Ooops, sorry!!

I'll shut up now!! :topicclosed:

what's your budget?

are you looking at used early samples pre facelift, or newer post facelift.

as the pre and post facelift have two different 3.0 engines, and different bhp. one being 230ish and the other 250ish.

bolt on mods never add much noticeable gains against £/bhp. but got to say sounds alot nicer. my last two cars (celica and audi TT) i've added intake and back box, both branded, and made awesome noises over stock, without being chav or loud. but i'm sure the 3.0 makes a nice noise on it's own accord.
