I have also been after a sportier sound for my Z4. I am having 2 1" bypass pipes around the back box put on, from what I've read online so far that seems to be the best option in terms of improving the sound but avoiding drone, and also fairly cheap! I can let you know how it sounds next weekend.

Spoke to cybox yesterday.
They are going to do some research to see if a front silencer can be added but for now they are gonna weld the stock box back on.
