Performance Chip

Does anyone know if there is a performance chip available for my 2003 Z4, 2.5L (E85) with the M54 motor? I owned a 1987 M6 for ten years and was able to raise the HP from 255 (?) to 300 with a replacement chip.

You can get rolling road tunes that will bump the BHP up a little, which is fine if you like to tell everyone the headline figure from your bar stool. But in reality it is the extra bit of torque and the smoothness that makes all the difference.

First things first, do you actually run super unleaded? If you don't you're not even getting the most out of it now.

Generally chipping cooking N/A engines is a waste of time as the gains are negligible. And, even if they weren't, in the real world they're pretty pointless, IMO - I favour handling over power any day of the week

You’ll get no extra power out of a twenty year old 2.5 by running it on “super” fuels. The car is designed to run on regular unleaded.
Higher octane does not equal more power unless the engine is designed to take advantage of the higher octane.

The M50 had knock sensors in the 90s and would only give the full 192bhp on super so I'm sure the M54 would have carried on in the same vein.

(I'm not saying it's a worthwhile thing, but it's about on a par with chipping as a thing to do.)

All cars have knock sensors and have done since fuel injection came along. The M54 is designed and tuned to run on normal unleaded. Knock sensors work by detecting knock and retarding the ignition until it stops, not the other way around. There are only a handful of cars that as stock will see the claimed power benefits of super fuels.

In France super 98 is e5 and only 3 cents more than normal 95 e10,so always put super in mine, anyway petrol here is nearing 2€ per litre so penny pinching is irrelevant unless I go to Andorra and fill up there.
