performance air filter element

any one fitted one ? can only find k&n listed for my car (2.5 n52) but the oil on these can mess up the maf sensor , i prefere the green cotton ones but not sure if it fits my car

hello, got a k&n on mine, all good - although im saving up for the AFE heatshield version... or something similar.... that said, my mechanic mate said the OEM was still better... hmmm

BMC one here, was a package together with the RPI scoop.

What is the verdict on the BMC CDA Induction?

Easy to install, decent sound, not too much loss of power etc

They seem to be going for £230ish online...

Not disimilar here - I have the K&N on and it's not a jot different to the OEM in performance
Long threads and good research on here in the past that shows the OEM BMW is better than aftermarket form a filtration and air flow perspective.

Ordered aFe Stage 2 for my 3.0si yesterday. Looking forward to hear if theres some nice sound coming from this mod.
Going to put it on the Dyno afterwards too to see it its just for the sound.

x2

Hmm I was looking at the k&n but other threads have turned me off with the maf issue.

Does the k&n filter give the car a better sound?

You wouldn't say that if you'd seen the amount of crap burnt on to the MAF wires of e34 M5s (they go through a regular hot wire cycle to try to burn off contaminants).

I don't really have any problem with non-oiled performance filters, just think they're overpriced for something that arguably does a worse job (i.e. filtering).

Even some of the M5 tuners recommend non-oiled versions for the M5 for just this issue - although they word it as "dry filter - so will not foul the expensive M5 MAF sensor".

RPI scoop / BMC filter gave about a 2 mpg improvement, power change unknown, slight increase in intake sound on my M.

Just a 15 minute mod to do this and fairly inexpensive based on other member's feedback and a huge bimmerforums thread about this one, so I just had to try it :D

With regard to any breathing mods and mpg, i had a gruppe m induction kit on my old civic and found my mpg to be worse, but that was because i had more of a tendancy to rev it more because i just loved the roar. I find induction kits to be an expensive mod where the majority of kits increase the decibel level as opposed to the bhp. not looked at any for the zed, but a lot suffer with heat soak on other cars.

i ve seen this problem on vag 2.0 tfsi engines too, can use oiled filters but need to wipe xs oil off first
might just order a new filter from the dealers and spend the difference on some other mod :D

Is the RPI Scoop an essential in conjunction with the BMC....as doesn't the BMC have a carbon heatshield enclosure anyway?

If there is a significant increase in noise from this kit I maybe tempted....there isn't much in the way of vids on youtube so can't really tell.

I installed both at the same time, so can not tell what did what to be honest ...

but on the BMC site it shows like BMC CDA fits the 3.0i (M54) not the 3.0si (N52)
anyone tried to fit CDA onto N52 engine - should be ok, but I dont know whether there is enough free space for the filter box?

EDIT:
This one looks quite tempting.. anyone tried this?

lookin good
does it sound any better?
and does it accelerate/rev any better?

and i'm still waiting for the answer if anyone tried the BMC CDA on n52 engine

Sounds great from outside. With this kit you will lose the soundgenerator. You can see the little filter behind the tube from the air filter. This small filter is just put on the soundgenerator tube that goes in to the firewall.
I will check a little this weekend to se if I can mod the AFE and reinstall the generator...
I will write a DIY on this install soon. Also if I modify it with the generator.
Havent noticed any difference in performance.
