Pentax Cameras anyone?

I am currently looking to upgrade my current kit to a higher level (Canon 450d - currently still available for sale on here)

I have always stuck with Canon but have read excellent reviews on the Pentax K3. Are they really as good as being made out?

My late Dad and I have had a zillion Pentax cameras and I currently have a K5 and a 1stD. I love the K5 but have never used a K3 so check out the Pentax forum for reviews and comments .....

I would love to help but I went from Canon to Sony Alphas and convinced my other half to invest in a NEX 5 and 7 to replace his EOS. He loves it. I always used Pentax 35mm for school work, loved them. Hopefully you'll find your answer but I usually find that camera reviews tend to be a lot more accurate than some other types of reviews out there.

I am in no way knowledgable on the other brands, but would say (personally) that if you are happy with the Canon, then why change brand? The "newer/higher" bodies will have a sense of familiarisation to them, rather than having to learn what the other brand call different options, and learn a new menu structure.

Its not as if Canon's are rubbish!

(I own 2 canon dSLR's so might be biased!).

It looks like a nice camera, interesting camera and great features. Swapping systems for a body isn't something I would do.

If it were my money I would keep the lenses and stick the camera on Ebay and buy the new 70D. It has pretty much won camera of the year with every major reviewer or at least best in class. Not only is it a 7D in a 60D body with the 360deg rotational screen, it has a new dual pixel 20.2mp sensor with live view autofocus phase detection in video a DSLR first, it also has the 19point AF system straight from the 7D, 7FPS and wifi. Not just that but Canon has arguably the best lens system for DSLRs on the planet, the EOS system lenses are incredible even the budget lenses and L lenses are an addiction.

In fact its so good I was thinking about buying one to go with my 5DMKIII.

This coupled with the 18-200mm STM is a great all round camera. Mike Drew in the video is a journalistic photographer and is using the 70D with a 18-135mm STM in a professional setting which is incredible for a consumer camera.

The only other thing you could think about is going mirrorless, they are brilliant if you want the same quality in a substantially smaller package without all the bulk of the DSLR. The new Sony A7 and A7R are incredible or the new Sony A6000. Brilliant I have a Sony Nex5N and love it when I'm not shooting professionally.

No idea on the pentax... Except my first digital camera was a pentax which fit in the altoids tin!

Interesting you mention the 70d.

I have a 60d currently and its picked up a bug where it randomly shuts down... Thought i would just get a 70d... And use my currently lens.

However i am also tempted by the olympus pen-p5 mirrorless... Which my camera buffs friends are trying to convince me to get and replace all my current kit with

Exactly what I wanted to say, but I didnt know it!

I've got a 20D (over £1000 when new!), a 40D (about £800 when new) and both worth peanuts now!

A 70D sounds nice!

I went with the Pentax of course because I had 10 others in the cupboard and a binful of lenses.. (most of which were for film cameras, not great with a DSLR)

If you have newer Canon lenses, go with a new Canon . Nikon lenses, go Nikon.

The review on Pentax forums compares the K3 to a nikon D7100

Quote "Targeted mainly at advanced photographers and enthusiasts, the K-3's improved key specifications are now on par with (or better than) those of the Nikon D7100, its closest competitor within the DSLR realm. "

Aquazi have you tried swapping the battery? Sounds like a battery issue. Does it give you any fault codes?

Olympus pens have 4/3rds sensors tiny compared to APC or full frame but they are nice cameras. The bigger the sensor the bigger the pixels therefore they gather more light and you get better quality. Again this can be difficult because cramming more and more pixels on a small area making a large pixel density which is great for detail but awful for noise. Which is why the Full frame cameras have a great low light quality as they are much larger but have the same pixel count. The 5DMKIII has 22mp and the 70D 20mp but the sensor in the 70D is roughly half the size and 4/3rds is about 1/2 the size again.

Pentax has always been a great brand but they are quite specialist and quirky cameras like the dark horse not the obvious choice. When I say specialist I mean for people who like things slightly differently, nothing wrong with that like buying a Z4 Coupe not for everyone. But they aren't very often first choice, but this camera looks very very good great spec. The thing that turns me off Pentax is the lens system the glass just isn't as good and no where near as available, they barely ever bring out new lenses. Canons lens system is thousands strong and continually upgrading them.

Everyone is different I like Canon but Canon certainly has some drawbacks. IQ on the 70D isn't as good as the K3, were talking splitting hairs tho. The K3 has no AA filter which sharpens up the image but adds aliasing. Adds horrible lines around man made lines etc But the 70D is better in all the above explanation.

Its like cars you can get hung up on spec sheets getting hung up on small item then when you actually get them its pretty impressive.
