PDC front and rear

Dave, thanks for that I will keep looking as you suggest but they seem to be quite rare.
I do appreciate that this is time consuming and my skills lie elsewhere. If I were to ask you to do the whole job labour wise what would that cost? My alternative is my regular garage who are actually likely to take more time and struggle with the iDrive integration and coding. If you want to DM me that’s fine and we can talk there.
Thanks for your help.

I am about to attempt this, so will start buying the parts very shortly. One thing I did notice when replacing the button on my centre console switch for closing tge roof, was that the ‘switch’ for the PDC appears to be there but there is a piece of plastic in the place of where the switch top should be. I can imagine cutting that away and fitting the new switch top. I wasn’t expecting tge pin outs on the bottom of the switch to be there but simply covered by the smooth piece of plastic on the top. (To disguise the lack of pdc) I wish I had taken a photo of it before putting it back in the car.

Haha. Well I suspect I will be in the same position.
It will be a proper summer job over a weekend I suspect and with a good weather forecast ( as I’m in the UK ).
Did you see my point about the centre console switch. I replaced my hood close switch top - as it had worn away, and I noted when looking at the switch that there appeared to be all the make and break switches for PDC as well. I would need to modify the existing switch by hacking off some plastic so I have ordered a PDC button top to see if I can get it out in place before recommending others do it. Hopefully someone else has noticed this as well and I’m not misleading anyone. I was tempted to take the console switch out again and take some photos to show to others…

I don't have the old control panel out yet to be able to compare it to the new one with the PDC button. I'll compare when I do, but that may be another few weeks.

It "looks" like it's there but their are components missing from the pcb so it won't work.
I checked this out previously and thought I could get it sorted, alas that idea got scrapped. Even more so when I picked up a very nice mint switch unit for £55

Hi Chris

I just need to get the front sensor mounting brackets. It seems like the kit only has the rear mounting brackets but looms for front and rear.
:(
What I am missing though, is the instructions. Do you have a set I could have a copy of ?

@Dave - I’ve watched your videos a few times and am going to try this one weekend when it’s dry in the summer. Are you planning to do a full install using the retrofit kit looms - only ask as the looms don’t all have plug in adapters but pegs which clearly need inserting in something.
Also the clips for the cable ties, they don’t appear to be in the retrofit kit. Where did you source these from ? There are what appears to be 4 clips but they look like cable crimps to me.

Any help most welcome… thanks guys.

This is what you need, the retrofit instructions from BMW.....

My retrofit is finished as is now, apart from, eventually, replacing the front bumper due to last years deer incident!! :headbang:
The clips I used were ones I liberated from work some time ago, so don't know where to find them.

Good luck Simnew, and don't hesitate to take a lot of pictures of the steps -- especially the ones that you didn't find elsewhere and add to the body of knowledge.

You could do video too, but not all of us are as naturally photogenic as Dave. :hairdryer:

:worthless:

Hi Chris

Just ordered the last parts yesterday - the front transducer mounting points and Dave kindly provided the missing instructions. Just need to check for the cable to front bumper mounting clips that the cable ties will lace through.
And you’re right, maybe I will be inspired by Dave and make a video when I do it. I will have to do lots of audio editing to take out the swearing, but who knows, it might be useful for someone and give some use to the GoPro I’ve had for a couple of years and never really used. We’ll see.

Simon :)

I would like to see more videos of the process. I think I've already watched all of Daves videos. I've got to do my Bluetooth upgrade first then I'm going to try the PDC assuming I can still get the wiring set.

Thanks,
Nick

Why do you think I do a lot of voice overs on my videos

Hi,
I've started to assemble the parts I need to do this retrofit. I've got the PDC controller, but I'm struggling to find the retrofit kit or any E89 PDC wiring looms. Has anyone seen any available online, or is there anything I can use with some minor adjustments?
Thanks,
Nick

Not only is it do'able, it is very easy (relatively speaking) if you buy the OE retrofit kit.

Retrofit kit - 66 20 2 157 297 - this includes all the wiring, the sensor brackets for the rear, clips and bits n pieces.
Module - 66209252638 - Front & rear
Sensors - 66 20 2 180 146 - 8 in total
4 x sensor brackets for the front - 51117844395
Switch unit - 61 31 9 146 642 - No Seat Heating and No Stop/Start
or
Switch unit - 61 31 9 146 645 - With Seat Heating.

https://www.baum-bmwshop24.de/catalog/product/view/id/73492 for retrofit kit
It may be out of stock currently, but it is indicating that it will be restocked.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/195672933757 This ebay seller indicates availability from Latvia, but they usually source parts after the transaction and take weeks/months to deliver. I've purchased 2 items from them and YMMV in results. Buyer beware.

Thanks, Chris. From my last few weeks of research, it seems like 66 20 2 157 297 is no longer available, and everyone I've tried is out of stock. I was particularly interested in how Dave put together his custom loom. I've already found the module, sensors and bracket based on the AnubisZed post you quoted.
Thanks for the update Chris, I’ll keep an eye on the sites. Has anyone had any success using another car harness? I wondered about trying to use a E88 but I suspect the grommet is different.
Thanks,
Nick
