PDC front and rear

Thanks.. I don't have a step bit for the holes and I see pdc hole punches are a good option. Is 18mm or 18.2mm the correct OEM hole size when choosing a punch?
18mm is what i used, but it is a snug fit, so the 18.2mm would probably be better

I’m trying to source this part for my PDC retrofit.

61-31-9-146-645 Switch Unit Center Console 613010 Z4. With parking aid. With park distance control, with heated seats

I’ve ordered several times to just have the order cancelled.. Sourcing this seems to be problematic. Any help is appreciated (new or used)

I've tried them, and several others - the most helpful parts department response so far is:

"This particular part number is on intergalactic backorder with an unknown fulfillment date at this time. There's a long waitlist for this part which means you could order this part and sit on backorder until our distribution center has this part in stock again. It could very well be a possibility you would be waiting on backorder until June. These parts are manufactured OE and brand new. We do not have any options to order remanufactured parts at this time. "

Is there a possibility of enabling PDC without an on/off switch programmatically?

OK so I've done some searching for you and it's looking like you won't get a brand new one, unless it's new old stock.
And the usual places don't have any of that particular version available (eBay etc).
So you either keep looking for a used one to come up or you go contacting breakers to see if they have one available. Now if you find a used one but it has scratched buttons, well they can be replaced, well at least the PDC and roof buttons can be, but nobody currently does the replacements for the heated seat button covers. As for replacing these button covers, firstly they are available on eBay and Aliexpress etc and are fairly decent quality (I've bought and fitted some of these in the past and then sold them on) and secondly I just happen to have a video on how to replace them :D https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X-7-l_adTlk

Unfortunately it's going to be a waiting game, best of luck

Without the button, they will still come on & activate if you select reverse.

You only use the button to switch on manually if approaching a tight spot nose first.

Excellent Mat, thanks for the clarification on that. If I'm on forever intergalactic backorder, I can at the least use some of the sensors.

To be clear - everything activates if you select reverse (front & rear).

What I haven't tried, is activating reverse (so they all turn on), then flipping back to drive..... you may be able to manage it fully without a switch at all!

I'm pretty sure when I reverse off the drive that the sensor screen is still pinging away until I hit >15 mph or so, after I'm driving down the road (forwards).

Just tried it - it does exactly as I said - you could cope with no button. Just select reverse to switch on, and they auto off once you hit above about 15mph.

Thanks for the real-life testing of the theory. I did get a few responses today that the only stock of part 645 in the world was at BMW/Mini of Wesley Chapel, Florida. I was able to secure it with a reasonable price and applaud the end of that hunt and thank you for the emotional support.

Anyone else seeking that part in 2023 will have to get on a multiple month backorder, but at least with Mat's testing will be functional until they do. As of today, Germany is showing to get 48 units on March 5th, but there is a 64 unit global backorder.... YMMV. :paper:

Chris, it’d be sweet to have a part list and how-to. Not for me, I don’t trust my hands with this level of work, but to share with professional installers. I may take the car to a local shop for the PDC and rear camera upgrades. Thanks.

All you have to do is get a nice Kentucky bourbon, grab some popcorn, binge on https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCttNBt ... UQnoEvKB2Q dave's channel for a few hours, and you're capable of anything.

Oh. I hadn’t realised Dave had a PDC video. I’ll watch. But with something better: Irish whiskey. Naturally.

:poke:

Guys as long as you're only drinking while watching, probably not a good idea to have a drink while doing the the work

Glad you've found one  I'll happily offer my services to 'pop' over to Florida to pick your switch up for you and then deliver it to you for cost

I'll be heading through Florida on my way into the Caribbean in another 2 weeks, but I appreciate the offer!

I do have a parcel shipping from the UK via Royal Mail... Do they still use horses and actual ships? Perhaps you could go feed the team or oil the steamer? It seems to be taking a bit of time... :poke: :D

I'm assuming the pigeon arrived from the UK then?
One can hope that "Item Leaving the UK" means it's headed to its destination rather than being chucked into the pond. What Royal Mail considers as tracking is a bit like an offhand "It should get there soon".

Everything else shipped DHL... In which I was told the pilot was moody and that it will arrive a day later. Very verbose.

It's amazing, I can order stuff from the US, normally through eBay's own international shipping, and it'll give me updates every step of the way. Every single little stop the package makes, whether it's a toilet break or a doughnut stop (for the driver, not my package!!). It tells me when it's arrived at the international hub, when it's had it's international postage label attached, when it's on the plane (enjoying the in-flight entertainment and a cocktail) and then when it's arrived here in the UK and finally handed over to the "local courier", ie; Royal Mail. Then that's it until I get a knock on the door and it's arrived at mine. UK tracking with Royal Mail is utterly atrocious, it's a joke

Hi Dave
Great article and video on this subject.
I am looking into this as an upgrade project to work with the iDrive function and have seen all the messages in this thred and am trying to get "Switch unit - 61 31 9 146 642 - No Seat Heating and No Stop/Start" part second hand as the £300 for a new one seems exhorbitant! I have found one on eBay for £150 that has the stop start function that my car does not have, is it possible to use that switch unit and blank the button?
Also as I am not that hands on with these things, if I source all the parts is there anyone in the Essex (+75miles) area that you could recommend to do the install?
Thanks John

Hi John,
Yeah that switch will work, the Stop/Start button just won't do anything. But if you're not in a rush then I'd just wait your time and keep searching.
As for fitting, this is quite a time consuming job to do, so getting someone to do this for you won't be cheap. I've had people ask me to do it for them and although I will I would always get them to do the majority of the labour intensive work first, otherwise it'll cost quite a bit as you're looking at a fair chunk of the day. Both bumpers and a few boot trim panels need yo come off plus the wiring running through.
