PC repaired, what a great feeling

I have been without my desktop PC for about two weeks after a hard drive failure, and OMG how I missed it. Sure I could use the iPhone for simple stuff but browsing was a pain. And I had my wee netbook rigged up with the PC peripherals so I could at least print.

BUT the PC is back with a Skylake processor, Windows 10, new HDDs and its great. It is like an old friend that has been on a training camp with Usain Bolt!

The PC was and is set up as Raid 1 so that the hard drive was mirrored so I still have everything after new guts had been put on. What a relief and I can highly recommend it.

Anyone else use a desktop or is this now old skool?!

I don't and only use iPads and phones really. Especially for browsing. I have a note book which is backed up as the "storage" but that's all it is really.

Yep Tower PC here. :D In Fact I have two running, one behind my chair runs Win98 for old Dos games. Have built my own ever since there have been PC's. Current set up is now ancient, by PC standards. But it works fine for what I use it for. :D

Have a Tesco Hudl Android pad for when I'm out and about, it's good for browsing, but touch screens are a pain for posting.. I love my full key board, Rather like Tesco petrol, is a great performer and way cheaper than certain other brands. :poke:

If they've put a sky lake processor in, it's had a new motherboard too. Sounds like you have a new PC in the old chassis!

I use a desktop workstation for my photography. 2x Xeon cpu, 32GB ram, nvidia quaddro card, SSD +4TB hdd. It's a bit of an animal.

2008 octocore MacPro - has been my workhorse for 7 years, but was starting to show its age, even with an SSD.

2013 21.5" iMac for work - dual boots Yosemite/Windows 7, this size specifically for 'portability', and ensures I have all the apps I need for anything that comes up without the client needing to buy further apps/plugins.

2015 retina iMac for fun (to replace the ageing MacPro) - dual boots Yosemite & Windows 10, with a 4 disk Thunderbolt RAID - runs games at 60fps @ 4k.

Built my first liquid cooled pc last year and its been an amazing jump from windows xp

Running Intel i5 processor unlocked at 3.5g with push pull radiator for the water cooling.

I like my PC to be virtually silent but have a fan speed control on front panel for gaming (TF2) in the summer.

P.S. loves window 7 pro

I use an Advent desktop (Inlet i5 quad processor, 8GB RAM, 1.5TB disc) for all the serious stuff and an Ipad for casual web browsing.

Upgraded to Windows 10 (also did the wife's desktop), no probs at all and runs much faster.

Well after spotting this thread this morning. I thought it was time for a clean and tidy. Amazing what a differance clearing out all the old unused files and a few defrags makes to your PC. Now running a whole lot faster than this morning. Still not enough space on my Root partition though. only 8Gb free and to think my Amiga 1200 in the study only has a 1Mb drive

Also checked the spec for this old thing I'm typing away on:-

XFX nForce 680i SLI mother board. 1066Mhz FSB

Intel Core 2 Quad 6600 processor @ 3.1 Ghz

8 GB of corsair DDR2 running at 800 Mhz, (showing it's age now.)

500 Gb ADA Samsung HD

850 Watt Power Supply

Twin 1 Gb GTX 960 graphics cars. (The only bit I have upgrades in 5 years.)

and still running XP.

Still chuntering along, well enough for this old timer.

Well spotted sire! £650 buys - essentially a new pc.

Mine is/was for photography but although PSE can show the thumbnails, it can not find the file for photographs. It is so annoying and has put me off photography as I can not process the images.

Great if you can make the system drive a solid state as access can be up to ten times faster.

Can cold boot into windows 7 pro in 9 seconds now !
