pay the fine or do the time

Hi all after a clean 30 year licence got clocked at 79 mph by camera van on A 1 .clear sunny day in z4 not going to rant about police sat covertly taking pictures of common criminals, my question is whether I pay the fine and take the points or pay a slightly smaller fine and spend a day being told off. Does your insurance increase with 3 points on.

Go for the speed awareness course. That's what I did and the event was lot more interesting than I ever imagined it could be. Mine only lasted 3 hours or so.

I still put into practice what they said; e.g. As soon as I get to a 30 mph area I get into 3rd gear and I do, now, stick to 30mph in those areas and I am more aware of what the speed limit actually is wherever I am.

I don't know what the increase in your insurance premium would increase by for 3 points, but would be amazed if it didn't increase.

So, go and get told off!! :telloff:

Personally I'd do the course.
You only get the option if slightly over the limit, so I'd take the course while you can, in case you don't get a choice next time. That would then leave you 6 points, which will definitely affect your Insurance.

Its not a bad day, its a bit of an eye opener and you don't get lectured. They're actually quite clever not to patronise you. However, don't go looking for an argument as they've heard it all before and have an answer for everything !

My insurance definitely went up once I had three points - significantly - avoid it if you can if say

Looks like I'm going to take the slap on the wrist .Please someone tell me otherwise. I've always obeyed speed limits in towns, but come on, 79 on a sunny clear motorway. I'm really on the fence with this.

Also, consider that whilst the 3 points stay on your license for 3 years, those damn Insurers count them for FIVE years....
Take the course...

Keep in mind that when you get 'three points' you are also given a code and this depends on the offence. Supposedly you get penalised more for speeding in a 20 or 30 but it's less of an increase when it's on a national speed limit road.

Unfortunately you need to declare a speed awareness course to your insurance company and this will still effect your insurance premium. Can't comment on if this increase will be more or less than taking the points.

Take the course and suck it up. It's the better option. The fact you were 'only' doing 79 on a sunny day is irellivant. You were speeding, we all do it and you got nailed. End of!!!! :)

Yep - I agree with all above, take the course. 3 points will increase your premiums. I did a course a few years back and as others have said it was quite interesting - I learned quite a bit. It's also fun watching the attitudes of the others on the course: It ranges from 'I cant believe I'm here!', to silent indignation with arms folded and grumpy face for 3 hours, to open and honest questioning.

Take the course... I did it and found it interesting... They have them evening and weekends so dont need to take time off work.

Although with admiral my premium went up £80 at renewal time after i declared the course (they were still the cheapest though) so bear that in mind.

Like I've said either way you have to declare either points with a code or a speed awareness course for the next 3 to 5 years depending on your insurance company.

Is there anyone on here who has recently renewed and has attended a recent speed awareness course? If so how much did it effect you? And what questions did they ask?

If you get points you'll tell them you have a SP50 which indicates it was on a motorway whereas the speed awareness course could be for anywhere and unless they ask where it happened, the speed of the road and what speed you were doing they can make assumptions that you were doing 85mph or 40 in a 30 and penalise you more.

Long gone are the days when the speed awareness course didn't need to be declared. Either way you loose but by how much is anyone's guess.

not really - you won't get an awareness course for 85, or usually for 40 in a 30.. besides the difference between 40 in a 30 or 80 in a 70 won't really affect matters going by fines and renewals that relatives and freinds have had. My sister's went up 40 quid after the awareness course, mums barely moved..

It depends on the insurer, not all of them ask about speed awareness courses (usually just claims or convictions in the last 5 years).

Regarding insurance, the law actually states that you're not obliged to disclose information that you might think is relevant if it is not requested.

Thanks all, that clears that up then.so as I see it you take the fine and the points, 3 to 5 years.or you do the course. ..pay the fine and still declare 3 to 5 years to insurers.what the he'll.
