Passport Renewal

Sent my old passport off to be renewed earlier in the week and received a text this morning from the nice passport people saying I should receive the replacement within the next 3 weeks. Received another odd text this evening asking me to Sign my new passport :? and giving this link https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/help/sign

Any idea what this means?

Cheers,

Tim.

Not long renewed mine. Never received any thing like that. Hopefully some one else has, other wise I would look up the number and call the passport office to check it's genuine.

I would guess that it means that your passport will be with you sooner than 3 weeks. The link to that page seems rather unnecessary. Surely they could just wrap a piece of paper around you new passport stating the same thing?

I cannot believe it's a scam as that page doesn't take you elsewhere, although there is a link to give feedback which seems an appropriate thing to do.

Its a genuine link to a https secure .Gov beta page (pilot website version still under development) just telling you to sign your passport as soon as you get it, it repeats info elsewhere on their site. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/signing-your-new-passport/signing-your-new-passport

They probably spent £millions with outsourced web developers so it might be worth using the feedback link to let them know it's poorly explained and confusing (or crap as we might say) :D

Was just applying for a replacement passport for my wife this evening. She's had photos taken only for me to now find the new beta system is live and everything steers us to uploading a digital photo.
Wouldn't mind and it will be easier, but now Mrs has to go back and get new digital photos (or me take them to spec.) or get a paper based form from a post office.
Right PITA

Thanks for the replies much appreciated. It is a little confusing, especially receiving the text as it seems a nonsense. There's no mention in guidance booklet that comes with application form that you have to sign the passport upon receipt. I assumed they create a digital copy of the signature you enter on the application form and it goes in the passport, that's what they did on my old one.

The text message confused me somewhat.

I did think of applying online but it seemed a faff ensuring the digital photo would be the correct size etc so I just popped into a local photographer shop and took a passport snap there and then.

Or scan & upload the ones you have?

It cost me 7 quid to have 4 photos done at a professional photographers, although 3 of them are pretty useless as I have no clothes on :)

Hey, it is easier than for me - just spent over a week in NL as I can no longer get my passport in the UK (Brexit?).

Anyway, free coffee at the passport office in NL

Sadly not so easy. No scan, copy, crop, edit, photoshop, etc. I suppose I can understand as a terrorist is morphed into a suburban office worker
