Passenger door won't open with key

It used to be quite random, it would sometimes open and sometimes not. Now it just doesn't work, I have to enter the car from the driver side reach for the passenger's internal handle to bring up the lock knob, and then the door works fine on both sides.

I'm looking to get this fixed as it's sometimes embarrassing when my date tries the passenger door.. :headbang:

Thanks in advance.

I've got this myself, probably just the actuator in the door getting lazy...
Maybe this will help https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=121354

Is it this part that's probably causing this issue?

I think so! But not 100% sure.
If you can find a used one, then try, I wouldn't buy new unless 100% that is the problem!

Just to follow up on this, after doing some research this can be either the door lock actuator or the GM5 module that's under the glove compartment.
Unlocking the car with key does not open the passenger door and the black door lock knob doesnt pop up even though it sounds like something is going on in there when pressing the key, as if its trying to open.
Locking the car with the key works great on both sides.
Once I reach the passenger side internal door handle and bring up the door lock knob, the door works on both sides.

I hope these symptoms indicate whether it's the gm5 module relays or the door lock actuator. :headbang:

The way you describe this it sounds like the problem is local within the door. So more likely the actuator.

Pull the connector off of the door actuator and check for voltage when you press the unlock button. If you have voltage the actuator is bad if you don't it's the relays in the GM5.

Will give it a shot this weekend. Thanks!

If it does turn out to be the GM5 I can sort that for you.
Im hoping that you can help with a e85 issue I've been having on and off, for teh past few years.
Firstly, both my keys work and have had batteries replaced, so I know its not that.

Went to open the car, interior lights come on and the SMG pump whir’s up/primes, alarm red blip goes out but no unlock.
I then press lock and the light goes out and the alarm red blip blips on the mirror.

So the car is locking and unlocking its self, the only problem is the doors dont unlock!
The car thinks they do, but they dont.

My other big issue, is that the door locks dont work, so I cant eve try and open the car with the key blade.

So, this weekend I plan to unlock the car, ( so it thinks its unlocked ) and then open the boot and disconnect the battery.
Leave for ten mins and the reconnect it. Any idea if this would reset something and hopefully allow me to gain access?

Im guessing it is the GM5 module that needs replacing, but my biggest issue currently, is getting to it!
Any thoughts or advice you can give would be most helpful.

Hi there, good to keep these issues in this thread. It does sound like a GM5 problem but as to how the hell you get into the car if the lock also doesn’t work mechanically with the key. Hmmm, that’s a tricky one!
