Tapping from the back could be a stone caught in the tyre tread. I've had this a couple of times since I've had the Vreds on - annoying!

My passenger door did the same the other month on way back from goodwood festival of speed.
I disconnected the battery and ran diagnostics, cleared all faults, hasn't happened again !!!

When I ran DIS v57 I did quick delete so did see if car through up a code, but my slightly sticky steering when warm also has gone!!!

I'm not saying this is a fix for the steering but it worked on my car. My guess it reset the steering ecu.
