Passenger Airbag Deployment

Thats what you need to do, with a magnifying glass - before you plug any new airbags back in.

Just curious to see what it looks like and the state of the dash after. Not to worry.

It pops out through a hatch in the dash. The dash itself has a pre-cut section in it to allow this to happen. The flap is thrown open with enough force to slam into and smash the windscreen.

Ah. Thanks. I think at this point he's spooked enough that it will be the end of the car for him. Will see.
I must admit I was looking at my own and wondering.

I'm not saying thats what you should be doing but it is what i would be doing unless I knew exactly why it went off in the first place.

I would definitely like to know myself (and share with others), but I'm not sure there will be an opportunity to reach root cause.

That's crazy. I am very concerned about the airbags with the age of these cars. If you were in the US I would suggest you file a complaint with NHTSA because this could have liability implications on BMW's part.

I went to my local BMW and was told by the Workshop Manager that what has happened "cannot happen" and they didn't seem overly concerned beyond quoting me £202 an hour for diagnostics. Might reach out to BMW UK but doubt they would do anything.

At the end of the day it’s a twenty year old car. BMW say all the airbags should be replaced after fifteen years believe it or not.
Have you plugged a decent software scan tool into it? BMW Scanner 1.4 for example.

It looks like August must be a bad month for deploying airbags, I just succeeded in deploying mine while clearing error codes.

Still looking at this. Here's one similar issue I found:

Not at this point. I've been busy elsewhere. I don't have access to a BMW Scanner. I need to source one.
