Parking Ticket

On a little meet a couple of weeks ago in Rye I parked up in a car park at 08:37am but didn't purchase a ticket until 09:01am as we'd been standing around chatting.I only paid for an hour as I knew we would be back in time after breakfast but because we stood around chatting again my ticket ran out at 10:01am and I didn't leave the car park until 10:31am.Is it worth pleading my innocence or should I just pay the £40 fine.

When did you get the ticket Eddie?

Others who were there may also get caught by this as the cameras record your time in & time out - I can't remember if I bought a 1 or 2 hour ticket

Perry,I entered at 8:37am and left at 10:31am but my ticket only covered me from 9:01am to 10:01am
Taz,they do have a picture of my reg plate.I paid £1:20 for my ticket as apposed to £2:40 which would have covered my time.

Sorry Eddie, I meant when did you receive notification of the fine - they may be in the post to some of the rest of us

Send them a cheque for the underpayment and £10 to cover their admin costs with an apology. If they pursue further ask them to prove their loss as a result of your underpayment.

They have sent you an invoice not a fine and they should only recover REASONABLE costs. They would need to sue you in a County Court for the difference where the judge would expect them to demonstrate their loss or that you entered into a contract with them and accepted their Ts & Cs.

Number5 that is very funny, it seems I now have a reputation because of a couple of my forum friends for getting lost occasionally

I paid for two hours so maybe that covered us

If it's a council run car park then you'll struggle on those grounds. I had a ticket cancelled for a council car park but that was a whole different story.

If it's private then by all means go down the actual loss route, if you can be bothered with the hassle and having to put up a fight (with a possible court attendance).

Thanks GreyZed,if I don't pay the £40 fine within 28 days of the letter which is the 10th the fine doubles to £80.

I can't remember if I paid for one or two hours but I don't normally underpay - was it a council car park or a private one?

Thanks for all the replies guys,I realise I only paid for an hour instead of 2 and it wasn't my intention to underpay I just got caught up chatting etc

We both bought 2 hour tickets.

It was a private company called Euro Car Parks
In that case, I'd do as GreyZed suggests, private companies cannot 'fine' you and their only claim is for lost business - although I'd just send them a cheque for £10 as I'm sure that the extra £8.80 would more than cover their admin costs
