Parking sensors

Had the z4 a short while now. stealer never mentioned anything about parking sensors, and it wasnt until i got some polish in what would be the sensor, i thought, are they actual sensors, as i thought they were blanking covers. they have never alerted me when i have been in close proximity to something if they were! any functional i can do to prove if they are actual sensors? other than putting hand infront of them. car is sterling grey, the sensors (if they are, are black) Feel free to abuse me for being dull!

Strange you have black sensors on a grey bumper. The hand-click-while-in-reverse trick is the quickest way to hear if you have activity. Could be that there are connection issues if you're getting no sound whatsoever.

Or the black circles are actually indeed blanking plates in which case the previous owner had a very bad case of colour blindness.

maybe you just park so good the sensors have never had to warn you hehe

but to test, i would just stick it in reverse and drive close to something, they should warn easily within a couple of feet of anything

The sensors on mine are colour coded to the car and are so sensetive they a start screaming if I even think about reversing.

Faulty aftermarket version maybe?

Andy

I'm not sure about the BMW PDC, but my old CLK shut down the system if one of the sensors wasn't working. Iv'e never seen a miss-match of colours on a Z4, can you post a picture, its quite easy to spot aftermarket sensors.....

the only ones I have seen which weren't colour coded, were after market ones installed on a Z4,which didn't look very nice (to be tactful ;) )

I would think they are after market ones, so could be activated by a button is not connected to reverse.

You should hear a beep/beep/beep sound, increasing in speed as you get close to the object.
If you just hear a crunch sound, I would suggest they are not working. :D

As said above you should here a beeping sound as soon as you get near anything even a wall slightly to one side of the car can set them off and reversing onto a road they will sound when cars pass buy.

If they are broken you will get a solid tone out of the speaker on engaging reverse to let you know, which is bloody irritating.

x2 made me jump and panic at the same time when it first happened :x

Many thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated. I get no audible tones, did the hand infront of the sensor thing, and nowt! I also have these black plastic things on the front bumper! I will try to get some pics on here, can it be done via iPhone? As that is my primary surfing device at the mo. Just out of curiosity, when you guys turn your key (position just before start) do you get an audible tone whilst the ecu initialises?
