Parking Sensors ONLY works in the wet

Hi there,

I've had a very weird problem with my parking sensors. When put in reverse I get a constant beep. But if the car has been soaked by a drive in the wet, it suddenly works like a charm.

What I've encountered so far is:

There is no error code from the system.
Checked all sensors - they all do the ticking

Could it be verdigris on a cable joint/contact or something similar?

Anyone experienced this?

Thanks

Kim

Its a strange one, not heard of this problem, hopefully someone might be able to shed some more light on it.

It sounds to me like an electrical bad joint/connector issue. I would be checking and cleaning the connectors to each of the sensors first.

A clean up of the contacts sounds like a good idea. Is it an easy job to remove the bumper and access the contacts of the sensors? Any link to a pictorial guide would be really nice thanks.

I would start by getting the sensors wet, on by one, until it starts working. Basically, you want to use water to get the system working and that might identify what part is faulty or has a bad connection. Then, a good cleaning of the contacts or replacing that part should fix it for you.

Had a closer look at my sensors this weekend. The paint was sort of bubbling up. So there was a small Space between the sensor and the paint coat. Out of curiousity i pressed the paint to investigate the situation. Didn't give it much thought at the time. But I sat in the car, put it in reverse and suddenly the sensors worked. So my thought is: because the paint has bubbled up, the sensors thinks something is very close to them, hence the constant tone. When wet the paint might stick to the sensors and as a result of that it works after a shower.

So I'm thinking I need to take of the rear spoiler and pull out the two sensors that need a repaint. Clean and respray them. Agree?

My wife had a similar problem on her Beetle when the rear bumper was touched up. A tiny amount of paint 'bridged' between the sensor and it's surround causing a constant tone in reverse.
Quick scrape with a scapel blade to cut through the paint and everything worked as it should.
A main dealer had recommended that all the sensors be changed as 'apparently' they only last a few years before needing replacement...monkeys.

Forgive the intrusion.

My rear sensors are not working. When I select reverse I get a constant 'beep' but anything behind does not 'register'. Do I have to get the car system interrogated to tell me where the problem lies?

Thanks folks in anticipation!

Try inspecting each sensor looking for any material that may have lodged in the edge of the sensor. Use a torch and really look into the gap.
If they're all clear then have a good look at the wiring into the back of each sensor and make sure it's all sound.
