Yes you do get used to it in time, but surprisingly I added it to my car years after I owned it.
OK, so I've done it both ways.
Firstly the aftermarket version. I added these for my rear only and in conjunction with my Android screen at the time. This type will still work without a screen and have a separate speaker for audio. These are straightforward to fit and there is no coding required.

Now after that I decided I wanted OEM PDC both front and rear, so went for a full retrofit. But you do have to do some coding of the system. Again though these will work without the screen (Android or iDrive), the sound then comes through the audio system speakers.

Personally I prefer the OEM proper PDC, I find it especially useful where I park at home (for anyone who's come to me for a retrofit before will appreciate that!), this works very well indeed with my rear camera (now viewed through the OEM integration and not my MMI box) as well.
