Well I got in today to discover I have have a parking fine for overstaying in a services.

I have had one of these before and the general advice was to ignore as they are not worth the paper they are printed on. That was a couple of years ago.

Anybody know of any changes to the law that make these more legit these days???

Yep I would check it out. There is an appeal system in place I think it was on Watchdog a while back sorry I can't be of anymore help....

Yep PCN but as above i think the rules have changed......cant find much in thus though.

I read the link you posted earlier but it is from 2006 :-/

thats when that guy joined it is from 2013.......

Still worth a read think its pretty much upto date. I got a pcn like 2 months ago not heard much from them which is worrying lol Good luck

From what ive learnt

Before they had to prove who was driving
Now they can chase the registered keeper
You can appeal through them if they reject (which they probably will)
You can get a code and appeal through popla or something like that
Thats if they're signed up to it
I your the registered keeper seems better to say u dont know who was driving still and u have more chance of getting out of it?
I had no choice as was in the company car :(

If you know you have overstayed ,you might just as we'll pay up as life is to short to have hassle for a small amount of money.

I'm not saying you should do this, but you could ask them for a picture with a close up of the tax disc as you number has obviously been cloned ...... The car of course was in Tibet at the time lolol

Sometimes its just worth the hassle. If you did "break" the parking rules just pay up. I spent so long researching this stuff in the past and its a pain.

The rules have changed so my suggestion would be to either appeal or pay and not ignore

Fair comments. I had one a couple of years ago when I parked walked away then moved to car within 5 mins as I was told not to park there (which in my opinon was an absolute joke)

Thing is......£100!!!!!

yea some of the fines are just ridiculous. 2 years ago I got a ticket from a guy dressed in casual clothes claiming to be parking attendant for a private firm... I never paid and never received any letters or anything.

It has changed now though because the registered keeper of the vehicle is liable. If for whatever reason you genuinely think you should not have gotten a ticket then you should appeal..

Yes it may have "changed" but the fundamentals haven't. Its happened 3 times to my wife and son. I've looked at the "rules" and the vast majority of these PCN have got no legs whatsoever. Classic example is where 2 of the aforementioned were tickets in free car parks. If its free then there is no loss to the parking company therefore they simply cannot demand contractual damages. This is why the parking company will threaten all sorts knowing they cant actually take it to court. My advice, and I know there will be others who will say the opposite is, don't pay a penny.

Regretfully there are any numbers of companies trying the speculative invoice route and they all rely on instilling fear into their victims. Again a family member had a £900+ invoice from Getty for an image they used on a web site. Similar speculative invoices were sent out to hundreds of people but not one was ever taken to court. Again the advice I gave here was to ignore.

All of these companies are wholly unable to fine you only a court can do that. However if you believe the nonsense they will send you anybody would think they have the power to hang, draw and quarter you.

Mafoo - was this a motorway type services?
If so I assume you parked up for more than 2 or 3 hours and didn't pay the parking rate? Drove to a meeting, etc.

If you were a genuine customer on site, then ask advice of who you were with, travel lodge, restaurant, etc. or appeal on that basis.

They are generally after people who park up and drive off to meetings, etc. and frankly I understand why they do that.

Frankly though if you didn't pay and overstayed time then pay up and move on. All too easy for people to say mount a challenge, etc. but ask yourself if it's worth the hassle.
